Evaluating the 00s

john titor

Captain
How would you evaluate it?

Imo I would give it a 3/10 compared to the 90s, 80s, 70s and 60s.

Music wise we've had emo, 80s retrogressive indie, the return of legwarmers, metalcore---Trivium, Nu metal, Limp Bizkit et al, "bling" rap music.

Movies have been good but there haven't been any iconic films like in the 80s with Back to the Future or Robocop. Too many superhero flicks and re-makes but that said there have been quality films-Oldboy, Pans Labyrinth, Kill Bill I suppose. There was also the trend of gore/torture horror films, which imo had no artistic value, although Saw was quite good because it had a plot.

Videogames-meh maybe I've grown out of them, I still enjoy playing something fun but Halo 2 just doesn't compare to the fun and quirkiness of Sega Rally or Virtua Cop. Morrowind was ok but a bit boring. Oblivion I gave up on. Games are still quite good, but I dunno, I get the impression that they've become more homogenized or something, everything is like everything else.

Fashion etc pretty bad.

The rise of social networking sites, youtube.

The Simpsons went really lame, Southpark got better and better.

This decade also witnessed flagrant spending, war and at the tailend a major economic collapse.

Overall I prefered the 90s.

I'd question how you're able to grade the entire decade before it's finished, but then I read your username, and suddenly it all made sense... ;)

My grade for the noughties thus far: C

Exciting first act, dragged through the middle before coming to an unremarkable but heartwarming finish. Although it didn't meet expectations, its performance should be sufficient to garner a sequel.

I'm still waiting for the killer twist ending that explains everything that's happened, before the closing smash cut rounds things off. :bolian:

I think I should be in charge of the 2010s.

  • I'll bring back sample keyboards, and power ballads.
  • Ceefax and Kilroy will be the staple of morning television, while the national anthem will always play on a night when the programs finish.
  • Also I'll bring back decent sci-fi films in the style of back to the future, or innerspace, or short circuit.
And it will be brill. :bolian:

You use that word again, "brill" like it's back in fashion or something. ;)

You forgot decent fantasy films, like a follow-up to Labyrinth, The Neverending Story, and a decent Highlander film. :bolian:

But, and I must stress this most carefully, you are NOT bringing back Kilroy. Unless it was for comedy purposes. :guffaw:

Well the Obama victory lifts it, there is a twist but its not obvious until the sequel.

Bush Strikes Back

Scalia: Lord Cheney, what about Michelle and Biden?
Cheney: They must never again leave this city.
Scalia: [outraged] That was *never* a condition of our agreement, nor was giving Obama to this bounty hunter!
Cheney: Perhaps you think you're being treated unfairly?
Scalia: [after a pause] No.
Cheney: Good. It would be unfortunate if I had to leave a garrison here.
Scalia: [to himself] This deal is getting worse all the time.

So does this mean 2012 will end with Ewoks? :wah:

I think the 2000s were decent enough to warrant a sequel. In fact, I envision a whole 9-part franchise. :bolian:

It will involve 3 prequels, though. I wonder how those might pan out...?

Fantasy films can be done. But no sequels or repackaging of old films; they'll all have to all be fresh stories, but created in the style of yesteryear :)

So long as we don't get a slew of Red Sonja wannabes and second-rate Hawks the Slayer then I'm up for that. :D

And they have to have stop-motion animation, optical effects, bad hairstyles, and extremely primitive and suspicious CGI created on a ZX-81. :bolian:

In fact, I predict this will all be possible as a result of the impending Collapse Of All Modern Civilization™ come 30th September 2016.

C

A very uneven decade that was lost in the wilderness for much of the time, especially during the middle years. Also, the early years look ridiculous in retrospect. In the end, we're wiser than we were at the beginning, but look at what we had to go through to get to this point, and look at what still needs to be done.

The music that has been produced in this decade has not been worth a sh*t--the same empty pop crap where artists lip synch. The profileration of hundreds of tv channels has just proven the old adage, "Quality over quantity". We saw in this decade our society both intellectually, culturally and politically on the decline. I see people becoming shallower and shallower. The educational system is laughable no longer demanding higher thinking-instead opting to simply be a business churning out ill-prepared individuals by the masses leading to a duller pool of citizens.

Journalism is nothing more than car chases, missing people, fawning over political figures and blondes in short cut dresses flashing their legs and tits as they read a teleprompter are what pass for reporters. Television programs and films are poorly written for the most part and when they aren't resurrecting older decent shows only to be messed on, reality shows and multiple incarnations of the same procedural dramas clog the airwaves. Some of the technical advances I haven't cared for. I get so tired of people talking on their cell phones or constantly texting all the time.

There was an unnecessary war that resulted in the death of thousands of soldiers, hundreds of thousands of Iraqis--not to mention the countless numbers maimed.

Grade: C-.

I survived this decade. So far. And I'm only eight years from retirement so that's good. All of my kids except for the last one have been raised, educated and moved out and that's good too. This decade has been nowhere near as bad as living through the 70s was, which will always remain a baseline for evaluating any decade for me.

Overall grade: C (or 5/10 for those who prefer numbers).
