What's keeping me out of the theatre....

You're in the wrong thread!

The Trek XI forum is filled with positive opinion! There's only one negative thread there. The TOS forum even with its bias of older fans is strongly weighted towards a positive reaction to the movie. Try the What do Diehard TOS fans think thread for uplifting positivity.

If you want a balance of opinions not influenced by a horde of rampaging Trek fans, go to IMDB and read through their comments page about Trek 09. Even with the 8.5 rating, there is a lot of negativity there, and comments that make the most negative statement on this forum and this thread seem like the height of optimism about the film.

^^ And nothing stopping you from enjoying the film. I learned long ago to not let my enjoyment depend on someone else. If I like something then I like it and I don't give a shit if millions of others don't. Conversely if I don't like something then I don't care how many people swear by it I won't be persuaded otherwise by constant harping. I don't need anyone else's validation one way or the other.

Everyone has expectations, positive and negative, and they can change their mind. But if they don't change their mind even after giving something a try then it's an empty charge to accuse them of setting themselves up for an inevitable result.

I loved the movie, but like Brutal Strudel, I can see several reasons why people may not like it. However, it does boggle my mind that a huge fan of TOS would find nothing at all to like, especially since there are so many winks and nods to the original series and films. It seems more like exaggeration and hyperbole than an actual opinion.

I won't even try to change anyone's opinion of the film, but I would like to know that there is a little common ground that those on opposite sides of the fence can agree on.

How so? I just posted my opinion of TOS fans who are predisposed to hate this film as someone who is a diehard TOS fan--for probably longer than most here. I made my point as I intended to do. Don't put me into the "JJ is teh Aweseome!!1111!!!" camp just because I am not being negative.

I don't think liking Trek outside of the original 79 makes me less of a "true fan." That is an argument you will not win.

Liking Star Trek isn't a mutually exclusive thing, nor should it be. Even GR knew that eventually fans would be split into eras of Trek. He wanted his vision to last so he could make a descent living. He didn't buy into the lofty Roddenberryesque Ideals™ until the show was off the air and he found he could make money on the lecture circuit by talking about the show. Obviously he needed to say more than, "I produced a show, it tanked so I walked off and tired to do other things." Thus the mythos is born.

QFT.

That's why I am posting here!

I really don't think those are winks and nods for the fans. Every wink and nod has to do with the Star Trek methos that has entered the everyday, popular culture. For example, fazers on stun, or "I'm a doctor not a...." It not for the fans as much as for the general public.

I'm sure you are right...

Admiral Komack...
Pike in a wheelchair...
the sound-effects...
the Tribble...
McCoy's ex-wife...
Sulu's fencing...
'George' and 'Winona' Kirk...
the gold pattern on Sarak's clothes when we see him for the first time...
the three Vulcan bullies...
'47' Klingon ships...
Kirk eating an apple during the KM-test...

Need I go on?

Sure, most of those such as sound effects, pike in wheelchair (well actually thats not a nod to anything, he was just in a wheel chair), tribbles, etc... are known in everyday popular culture. For example, cartoons like futurama... As for most of the rest, well half of them I am not aware of, (such as Kirk eating an apple I don't think thats actually meantioned in any movie) I think you are seeing more "patterns" then there really are.

No, of course, the sounds aren't a nod to TOS and neither is Christopher Pike ending up in a wheelchair. Have you even seen TOS?
Kirk eats an apple in TWOK (you know, that fan-favourite among the movies) when they talk about the KM-test.

Its been a while since I saw TWOK, but it was never meantioned that he ate an apple during the test. As for the wheelchair, you would admit that the chair Pike ended in nuTrek is very different from the one he ended up in the realTrek. And yes, sound effects, tribbles, etc... are well known to anyone who is even a little familiar with Star Trek.

He ate the apple in the Genesis cave, saying "I do not like to lose". And the rest of the things you mention are TOS references as well.

(I would've preferred the "feel" of TOS instead of just silly little references, but oh well.)

It wasn't. It's just that, having now seen the new movie, we know that eating an apple while telling Saavik about the test was Kirk reliving his memories in several ways at once. Wonderful!

As for the wheelchair, you would admit that the chair Pike ended in nuTrek is very different from the one he ended up in the realTrek.
Of course, but it underlines the sense of fate in these parallel universes. That something draws certain events together. Like the timeline trying to repair itself after Nero's intervention. Thus, no matter how different his life is, Pike is destined to end up in a wheelchair. No matter how different his life is, Kirk is destined to captain the Enterprise. Etc.

Yes, but what does that have to do with him eating the apple during the test? Thats idiotic. If thats a reference then fine, but I didn't get it. He was eating an apple because he was in the GENESIS cave!:) Thats a lousy reference, if it is that! I'm sorry thats another reason to hate the movie. Horrible! :-)

Sorry, I think you are reading a bit much into it. The movie was not that deep. They just wanted to put him in the chair because hey he was in the chair before. Nevermind how truly different. They took something fantastic from the original series, a true classic, and somehow changed it into a true idiosy.

Calm down, that was a joke. Boy, you guys just can't take critisism of the film well. There are so many reasons why the new movie sucks the apple is the least of its problems.
