Thoughts on "Rome" HBO series

I thought Season Two was in some ways better, even though it was certainly more compressed and slightly rushed in places. But either way both seasons of Rome are very strong and much better than The Sopranos.

Fantastic, brilliant, sexy, sick, power-mad, violent, noble, selfish - just like Rome itself, the series is a big, mad, complicated mess. And I adore it. It does one of the best jobs I've ever seen of portraying Roman culture on screen, with very little toning down for a modern audience. Atia and Servilia are tremendous as the driving forces behind so much of the action, Vorenus and Pullo are a heart-wrenching, heart-warming friendship, and I think the portrayal of Octavian is simply inspired. And I'm still making my way through Season 2.

I've watched it up thru the Battle of Phillipi. Well worth watching but honestly I'm not sure if I would have wanted them to continue beyond the natural ending point at the end of S2 (well, what I assume is the ending point -
Octavian becomes emporer having defeated all his foes

They cover the most dramatic & famous historical stuff, and I don't see why they'd need to go on and on.

You're pretty much correct.

One of the very last scenes is Octavian's official coronation ceremony.

I agree. I love watching Atia and I think Polly Walker is just wonderful. I think she and Hydn Gwynne were both wonderful.

Another Rome fan here. Polly Walker is amazing as Atia. Not every actress can make you root for such a vile and disgusting woman as Atia, even if she's as much of a knock-out as Polly Walker.

Adding my voice to the choir: fantastic series, from start to - quite literally - the very last shot.

Hey, Tomato!
And, didn't season one feature more sex? I think I just remember the large amount of penises/penii that I saw.

That was my impression although I haven't finished season 2 yet. I might be prejudiced by the shock of seeing how far they went in episode one

Thanks a lot for the comments, everyone! I'll be adding it to my Christmas list (after all, the list can never be too long)! ;)

Re: Thoughts on "Rome" HBO series

Forgive the thread Necromancy but, I just recently started watching this show on Netflix.

So, despite the poor quality of the discs that Netflix has been sending me, I am enthralled.

This series had such a "You Are There" quality to it that I felt like I had to talk about it once again.

The "common man" approach, most especially of Titus Pullo is fun beyond belief.

The genuine familial drama of Vorenus is almost as compelling.

I feel like this series gave a true "You Were There" feel to it's subject matter.

FYI, I just finished the 3rd disc of the 1st season and I am looking forward to the rest of this short-lived series.

Re: Thoughts on "Rome" HBO series

Atia was great. She did the whole bitch thing excellently everyone else who tried was poor in comparison heh :)

Re: Thoughts on "Rome" HBO series

I just finished the entire run via Netflix a few weeks ago and really enjoyed it.
I would gladly sit and watch a season 3 as I felt like there was more story to tell.

Now having said that there is no way in the world I would pay the ridiculous amount of money HBO wants for their series.
$60-$80.00 a 12-13 episode season?
No way.
No television show is worth that.

Had a little bit of that myself but try (believe it or not) boiling them for 5 - 10 seconds.
Works like a charm.

Really? Are you getting the disks from the Gaithersburg distribution center? I just watched the series through Netflix a couple moths ago and the disks were pristine...

Definitely a good watch, and the acting, characterization and production values are out of this world. Enjoy the rest. :bolian:

I'll respectfully disagree. This was a period show that was made at a great expense and the only way that shows like this get made is if they make money. I loved the show and I want to see more shows like it, I have no problem with voting with my money and letting the studio know that this is what I want to see. I want to see more Roman history, I want to see Napoleonic wars, both on land and at sea and things like that just don't make enough money with the general public (think Master And Commander), but if there is enough people who do want to see it and are willing to put their money where their tastes lie, then maybe we would get more of this stuff

Besides, the price per hour of entertainment is not that much more than going to the movies, and with this you get the DVDs you can re-watch.

The Epic bromance of Titus Pullo and Lucius Vorenus.

Vorenus's wife was sssssssoooooo fine. That chick who killed Titus's love was nice, too.

I think the price dropped to $50 bones per season. Stupid me for paying $100 per season.. :scream::scream:

That sounds nuts! Why do you think that it works? Where did you get the idea from?

The first two were from Gaitherburg and the third was from Sterling, VA.

All have been scratched up pretty badly. Did you do it?! :p It was so bad on one disc that my old DVD player wouldn't even play the disc so I went out and bought a new player.
