In the end, with all due respect to it's deep and meaningful messages, Star Trek is a sort of splinter-descendant of the Saturday matinée movie (like a certain other franchise) And that is not a bad thing. In the end it's about wonder, joy, imagination and fun. One more thing; this movie was more family friendly and family oriented than recent Trek; another good thing and right on considering the legacy and company Trek shares with other Saturday matinées: Flash Gordan, Buck Rogers, Hopalong Cassidy and Roy Rogers.

It needs $50 million domestically, and it needs it quick, if it's going to hit top spot for however long it can, T4 will zoom up on it quick. Then transformers after that.
I think it's safe to say that it will land in the top three for 2009. That's awesome for any Trek movie.

Funny the movie it needs to beat is Monster and Aliens, at $190 million it was released at the end of March so it won't be adding much to that now.

I agree that it will probably finish within the Top 3, definitely Top 5.

It's only real competition within the Top 5 of the year will probably be T4, Transformers 2, Harry Potter 6, and Avatar. There's some other movies that are bigger question marks (Christmas Carol, Twilight 2, Where the Wild Things Are, etc.)

Variety gave a good review to T4, but the review from The Hollywood Reporter wasn't so good and it predicted that T4 will not do that great after the opening weekend.

Yeah, I think it will open with $100+ million over its 5-day weekend, and then have weak legs.

I am looking forward to seeing T4 though.

I think T-4 will make 85-95 million in its OW and the only film that will have a 100 million+ OW is Transformers. depending on WoM it will be either T-4 or ST that will finish the year as 3rd highest grossing movie on 2009 at the US Box Office...(behind Trans & Harry).

Transformers and Harry Potter are solid bets to be in the top 3 for the year, but I wouldn't rule out Avatar as a possibility for making it into the top 3 as well. But who knows. Avatar is pretty hard to predict.

Avatar is going to be released too late to do too much damage this year.

Sites like Box Office Mojo just lump all movies into the year of release and don't distinguish grosses that cross over into a different year. I guess it would be too much work and too confusing. So like Titanic is listed in 1997, even though it made $488 million in 1998 and only $112 in 1997.

"Angels & Demons" earned about $48 million during its first three days of release in the United States and Canada, reaching No. 1 on box office charts and eclipsing last week's champ, "Star Trek," which slipped to No. 2 with $43 million.



"Star Trek" lost just 43 percent of the audience from its opening round at box offices last week. Total sales rose to $147.6 million. The sci-fi reboot was distributed by Paramount Pictures, a unit of Viacom Inc.



"X Men Origins: Wolverine," which kicked off the lucrative summer movie season two weekends ago, was down one to No. 3 with $14.8 million. The total for the superhero picture rose to $151.1 million, with foreign fans kicking in an additional $144.5 million. The film was released by 20th Century Fox, a unit of News Corp.

Enough people to make the films consistent smash hits, especially in worldwide box office, and I don't see that changing for the final three films. I don't think Harry Potter 6 will be a contender for the domestic crown (that'll almost certainly go to Transformers 2), but it'll be one for the worldwide crown.

Yeah, but it was released around the same time as the last book and probably benefited from all that hype that was built up. I'm just not convinced people care as much anymore about the saga since we all know how it ends. Look I'm not saying it won't make a ton of money...just call me a skeptic.
