Star Trek - Wednesday - $5.78 million

$5.78 million isn't bad at all for a Wednesday. I'm sure Angels and Demons will be number 1, but Star Trek will do well on it's second weekend. I think it could pull in $35 million or up Saturday and Sunday. I'm not interested in seeing Angels and Demons this weekend, but might just say heck with it and go see Star Trek again. I know several other folks who are going as well, so I'm sure the film with have a prosperous weekend. It's all over next weekend when Terminator: Salvation comes out. Everyone will want to go see that for sure.

Right, but if Terminator sucks ass critically like Wolverine, it'll be short-lived. Also, with kids officially getting out of school, the audience swells to even greater proportions.

I think there'll be plenty of room for Trek through the long, school's-out weekend.

Yes they have. The average price for a ticket today is $7.18 (mind you this takes into account children/senior ticket prices and matinées). The average price for a ticket in 1979 was $2.51.

7.18? Around here the price for student/military is 8.75$

But you're forgetting, most movie tickets are sold on Saturday and Sunday during the day so matinée prices would apply. here in Phoenix you can still find theaters with matinée prices from $6.50-$7.50.

Not happy about this necessarily, 'cuz I love Tom Hanks, but his Rotten Tomatoes A&D rating is officially rotten. At 43% as I type.

Maybe that's why he mentioned Star Trek twice on the Daily Show... :p

Re: Wednesday Box Office: 5.78 million

Very bad news imo.

 Its doing better than Batman Begins, Iron Man and Wolverine! If you had said a ST movie would make $100 million in 7 days 7 years ago, they'd say you were crazy!

RAMA

EXACTLY!!!

I think it's Angels and Demons that's going to tank. But, maybe I am speaking from my own prejudice as I have zip, zero, nada interest in seeing that one.

Let's put it this way, Tom Hanks fans will go, as will the crowd that read the book. But they might only go once, along with some of the general audience. Word of mouth will not be good, however, sending people back to Star Trek.

At least that's my wishful thinking.

And Terminator bows on Thursday I understand?

And TMP was only number 8 at the domestic box office in 1979. A reasonable hit, but it was beat by Love at First Bite for christssakes.

Those numbers aren't correct. TMP was the #2 movie with 80+ million.
Agree. I saw in some Trek site that TMP is ranked 3th in US and 2th in worldwide when it was released in 1979-80. Same site says next Trek movie after TMP is TWOK and TVH 6th or 7th place respectively and not 3th.

It also has the advantage of opening on Memorial Day weekend.

Think about it though--so does Star Trek. Won't be raking in 10's of millions, but 2-3 a day for four days instead of 3 will be good too.

IMAX better extend Trek's run in their theaters given the percentage of the take it got.

Trek doesn't have a Memorial Day opening weekend. On average, how much of a film's box office gross is made that first weekend, right after the population has been assaulted from the studio's peak advertising blitz.

A good thing though, I haven't seen Columbia/Sony spend anywhere near what Paramount poured into Trek, have you? So while they won't have to make as much to break even, it'll be harder to break even.

Re: Wednesday Box Office: 5.78 million

Again, not impressed with this Weds number either. I have a sinking feeling the bottom is going to fall out this weekend with a 60% drop.

Very bad news imo.

You said that about the Monday or Tuesday number (or both?) too.

Indeed.

I have been watching BO numbers since 1999. I really think some of these kids don't actually know what they're talking about and are talking doom and gloom for no reason other than to be drama queens.

The film is doing INCREDIBLY.

Plus, the initial crush of faithful aside, what if the movie is just not that good like Wolverine?

Shelf life is a real factor though. If anything, it gives Trek another day or two more of 2-4 million takes.

Jeez I feel like a Jewish mother relative to this film... :D

Well, after having received new foreign gross numbers and adding Wednesday numbers too. Star Trek has moved up 2 places in Foreign gross section and sits now at 5th place. Star Trek has officially beaten popular The Voyage Home and The Wrath of Khan already in international market.

domestic gross:
8. Insurrection: $106.0 mil
9. STAR TREK: $98,987 million
10. The Final Frontier: $92.6 mil
11. Nemesis: $52.9 mil

Foreign gross:
4. Insurrection: : $64.0 mil
5. STAR TREK: $45,814 million
6. The Voyage Home:$44.5 mil
7. The Wrath of Khan: $43. 6 mil
8. The Undiscovered Country: $32.1 mil
9. The Final Frontier: $31.9 mil
10.Nemesis: $29.3 mil
11.The Search for Spock: $22.1 mil

Worldwide gross:
8. Undiscovered Country: $158.1 mil
9. STAR TREK: $144.8 million.
10. The Final Frontier: $124.5 mil
11. Star Trek: Nemesis: $82.2 mil

I already slept through Da Vinci code once. I don't need to do it again.
Go Star Trek. Third time's the charm.

It will be in 11 more theaters this weekend, not that it would make any difference:

Yeah, too bad Wolverine won't be losing its massive theatre count until next weekend when it will be harder for Trek to pick up many. With two major releases and a medium-sized release accounting for 10,000+ theatres next week, there won't be a lot of theatres for Trek to absorb. Plus, Trek will be losing its 150 or so IMAX screens.
