Errors and Inconsistencies - Stretching Credulity [SPOILERS]

Re: Errors and Inconsistencies... [SPOILERS]

Oh yeah, I think you're right. Still....ceti, centauri, what's the diff? In my mind, it was the same thing as in TWoK, whether that was the intention or not.
Yup, I'm willing to agree it was the same slug.

Re: Errors and Inconsistencies... [SPOILERS]

are those slugs related to the "Conspiracy" slugs? I read that someone wrote a novel in which the "Conspiracy" slugs were related to the trill.

Re: Errors and Inconsistencies... [SPOILERS]

What was the top speed we heard of in the movie? I think the highest I recall hearing was warp 4.

I think when Pike consulted with Kirk and agreed it was a Romulan threat, they punched up the speed. I forget how fast.

Unlikely, the conspiracy parasites had some sort of intelligence/ formed a hive mind and took over their hosts. The eel Khan used seemed to just impair a person's free will so another person, but not the creature itself, could control the infected person. The design of the slug in this movie is quite similar to the conspiracy parasites...not that that general design is anything particularly unique.

Re: Errors and Inconsistencies... [SPOILERS]

I don't think a top speed was given... (the warp 4 i heard was speed needed to get to sol before nero - not a top speed).

Even if it was, consider that the enterprise was not run in yet, and speed might have been lower (which help explains how come it arrived a vulcan so late, it left only seconds late, and there was no apparent change in speed)

Re: Errors and Inconsistencies... [SPOILERS]

Oh good. The Kelvin is in service twenty five years before the events of TOS, yet it has flat panel displays and labeled controls. In TOS there are just photographs of nebulae, blinking lights, and switches. Since the Kelvin is in the same universe as the original E, what explains this difference in continuity?

A simple 'style of the time' works for me, to be honest.

Re: Errors and Inconsistencies... [SPOILERS]

What I didn't like was the way Gary Mitchell appeared at the end of the movie and by sheer will reverted everything back to the original timeline.

Gary's DEAD. Can't these guys get anything right?

I guess they were asking for it, freeing him from that rubble on Delta Vega. Mitchell exists in all possible Star Trek universes.

I'm even easier and will accept that since this movie is 40 years after the original show it make sense to have flat panel displays, etc because that shouts "futuristic" these days. Enterprise NX-01 was 100 years before TOS and it still looked more futuristic. Making the Kelvin look like 60s Enterprise I think would have just served to confuse viewers who aren't into Trek.

I didn't quite get why one of Kelvin's shuttles had those clear plastic vertical strips that you normally see on the front door of the corner take away shop. It just seemed odd to have them at all.

Here's a question, how did they know the Naranda was a Romulan ship?

Re: Errors and Inconsistencies... [SPOILERS]

Because Nero appeared on the viewscreen of the Kelvin minutes before it was destroyed?

The beaming Amanda did kind of bother me a little, but the explanation given further up is fine, she fell a smaller distance, Chekov had less time to get a fix before fatality occurred.

I absolutely loved the film, nothing bothered me, I did think by the third time Kirk had grabbed hold of the edge of a very long drop they might have used that a little too much for one film, but at least it was a consistent theme for him.

Because Nero appeared on the viewscreen of the Kelvin minutes before it was destroyed?

And how did they know he was a Romulan? If the timeline up to that point followed the "old" timeline no one in the Federation is meant to know what a Romulan looks like.

What did you guys think when Nimoy Spock shuddered and said, "I sense a great disturbance in the force," when Vulcan exploded? Was that really necessary?

I think the line would have been 10 times better if he had somehow mentioned midichlorians... Oh well, another lost opportunity for JJTrek

If they cut that when he has his sword duel with Quinto Spock and the cuts off his hand before revealing, "No Quinto Spock, I am your father" would have made no sense at all.

Re: Errors and Inconsistencies... [SPOILERS]

noooo. nooo. that's not true. THAT'S IMPOSSIBLE

Re: Errors and Inconsistencies... [SPOILERS]

He could... walk outside? As he did, in the mind-meld-flashback.

And see what? My point is that if he's stranded on that planet, he'd be oblivious to everything that's going on around the galaxy, so how is he witnessing Nero's revenge on him?

The flashback in the mind meld shows him watching it up in the sky - the implication is that the planet is close enough to witness the destruction visually. Yes, it's pretty unlikely - and if true would put Delta Vega very much on the endangered list under the Next to a Black Hole category - but that's the explanation in the movie for how Spock saw the destruction.

Because Nero appeared on the viewscreen of the Kelvin minutes before it was destroyed?

And how did they know he was a Romulan? If the timeline up to that point followed the "old" timeline no one in the Federation is meant to know what a Romulan looks like.

Perhaps somebody found out after the Narada incident? I forget - was the fact Nero was Romulan mentioned by the Kelvin crew explicitly or was it only mentioned when talking about the event in the past tense?

No, that's wrong. You collapse the Earth into a black hole, and it'll have the same gravitational attraction on nearby objects as it does now. It's the mass that it contains, not how dense it is.

The university of Illinois agrees with me. So does Nasa.
