Sam wakes up on Mars and it's all been a virtual reality programme.

I may be wrong though.

thats basically it, one nice touch I noticed was that on the space suits they had the name "Hyde"

wasnt there a TV pilot around last season, which was to be set in a virtual reality for astoraunts?

I think you're referring to Virtuality, which was/is Ronald D Moore's next project after BSG.
