Or the idea of using the straight-up Akira in its place...![]()
...please tell me that you're joking.
Drex said it himself: the folks in Production liked the design and directed them to use the Akira as it was. It was only he and Herman that tweaked it into the 'Akiraprise' to be more suitably pre-TOS and convinced TPTB to go with it.
Re the bulldozed sets: that's horrible. I didn't think much of ENT as a series, but the work put into the physical assets and designs by the production team produced some of the finest sets Trek has ever had. That Paramount wouldn't even save parts for reuse in other shows or films boggles the mind.

I suddenly feel a tremendous and warm affection for the ship we ended up with.

Funny, the same thing happened to me.

That's Les Moonives for you...

Jesus! I can't believe they just took that stuff and... wrecked it. You'd think they would have tried to auction it off or something, if they simply didn't want it anymore.

Les was sending the strongest possible signal that Trek was over, as far as he was concerned. TOS-R was little more than a gimmick that never signaled any real commitment to the franchise.
Note that everything "new" in Trek has been everywhere BUT the TV division, still under Les' control.

I hope the movie is such a hit that he has no choice but to capitalize on a new TV series, just because it would make him squirm.
Funny, the same thing happened to me.
Now, now, hoping for one new bad thing to happen so that something else that MIGHT be good might happen is going to extremes ... why not just frag the guy and be done with it?
I've pretty much always laid the blame for the face-palmers on B&B and the UPN suits, because at the end of the day they're the ones who determine the art direction and sign off on the final design. It's funny, but I always sort of placed part of the blame for the recycled Akira at the feet of the art department. That was pretty unfair considering it now sounds like Doug Drexler was the only man standing between us and a complete reuse of the First Contact design.
Heh, that last bit makes me laugh because they're using the same line to sell the new movie.Speaking of which: the mind boggles at the total lack of perception on the part of TPTB to think that a.) straight-up 24th century styling would pass for 22nd C, at least among hard-core Trekkies, and b.) that the utter lack of creativity involved would send a positive message about the new show. Weren't we the ones they kept assring that ENT was "not our father's Star Trek?" Yikes.![]()
