Is the Empire State Building the tallest in New York ?
I didn't quite know how to take that. I try to blend in wherever I go, I don't want to look like a tourist. I guess I failed. So they can see me coming - they probably figure, hey, why not let him down easy.![]()
You're from Nebraska, with that accent we can tell you're a tourist.
Tourist: "Excuse me, could you tell me where the Empire State Building is?"
Me: "Sure, See that big building, the tallest one in the city? Walk towards it,"
I already know where the Empire State Building is.
And I don't have an accent.
(Not that I do much talking anyway when I travel, except when I order at Katz's)

Yes, everyone has an accent, but they don't always sound as you expect them to... I know someone from Nairobi who sounds like an American, although she's never set foot there (has a lot of American friends). I know someone else right here in London, who sounds like an American southerner of all things (also has friends from that region)...
Not everyone's accent is completely pure - even though they may never have set foot outside of their region. It's rare, but it's possible.
That Bud video was absolutely hilarious! I wish they showed it here... I guess they assume the British public won't "get" it, but it was crystal clear, no explanation needed. Fantastic! Do you really view out of towners as complete hicks...?![]()
A couple of weeks ago, a girl asked me "Where is the White House?"
This was while we were in front of the White House.
