I have seen STAR TREK!

Last night, there was an advertised screenin' of Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan that turned into a free advanced screenin' of Star Trek (2009) with the three writers and Leonard Nimoy in attendance.

And when he sat down, Leonard Nimoy was only four seats away from me in at the screenin' at the Alamo Drafthouse - South Lamar in Austin, Texas.

Anyone in Australia who thinks they were at the world premiere...y'all had just started by the time we finished in Texas, accordin' to the folks who would know!

Thanks for the review. It doesn't sound like the movie is perfect, but then I never expected it to be. It does, however, sound like it will be enjoyable, so I'm still really looking forward to it.

Well, to be fair, the linked site only talks about a ten minute preview of the movie, not the whole thing.

I've got to say, the description of McCoy's introduction - and his explanation of how he comes to be in Starfleet - made me laugh out loud. And that's just reading it in html.

This is gonna be such fun.

Just a few random things that popped into mind after reading the review:

-- Foremost, wow! Just, wow! Any fears of being disappointed should be dispelled.
-- As most of us speculated, the performances bear out that the casting choices were brilliant. To get things restarted in the right direction, that was probably more important than the story itself.
-- It's too bad that even Nero can't escape comparisons to Khan. Not every villain has to be an evil genius to be a worthy opponent, he just has to be believable for what he's doing. That Nero is basically just a bull in a China shop in pursuit of his aim is actually kinda cool and just as dangerous as a calculating Khan-type.
-- The great "coincidence" mentioned in the review will probably generate a lot of discussion. Used for effect and used sparringly, coincidence is an important part of story telling, so personally, I don't have a problem with it.

Not surprising, since the movie was shown to an audience that came to see TWOK, most of whom are big fans of that movie.

In a few weeks this starts getting seen by people who may not ever have seen TWOK or may not all regard it as a pinnacle of film history (seriously, one guy at CHUD described TWOK as " easily one of the tightestly plotted films in any genre." Uh-huh). We'll see if they're moved to compare it to TWOK at all, and if so which film folks prefer.

It's axiomatic that, as a matter of plotting, the audience will forgive you one huge honking coincidence as long as it's early in the story. The reviews thus far give the impression that this one sticks out partly because it happens rather late.

That also spot on with what we know about his character, that he entered Starfleet because of his failed marriage and had been a doctor before joining.

There's a lot of geeky criticism, but the general drift I'm getting from having read three reviews is this: it's a great Mass Audience Action Adventure Reboot.

Paramount took a gamble with the right producers, the right writers, and most importantly, the right directors. Their casting was spot-on, apparently. This film will not only open wide, but make a boatload of money for Paramount. They are not even waiting for Federation Day to start on Part Deux: they are already doing Treatments.
