If THE CAGE never happens in this timeline...

If it does happen, it better TOP the original. If it doesn't happen, oh well; no biggie. I'd seen that story before anyway.

I think it's been pretty well established that once Nero destroys the Kelvin, all bets are off as far as the timeline is concerned, especially since I don't think the Kelvin was in the primary timeline to begin with (which just further pushes this temporal clusterfuck into the "who cares?" file).

I see you are once more your effervescent and articulate self... :vulcan:

I don't see why the Kelvin wouldn't be in the primary timeline from any point of view. That period of time is a big blank spot in Star Trek lore; if a new Star Trek production says there was a ship called Kelvin, who among us is to argue otherwise?

The look of the ship is completely wrong, the uniforms aren't a logical fit, and they're wearing Enterprise insignia.

But again, it's an alternate timeline, so why should we give a rip?

but the look of the ship is from a time no one knows what the ships look like. the Enterprise insignia could have been re-used from the Kelvin. The uniforms seem pretty non-descript... somewhere inbetween Enterprise and TOS. I guess to me, they seem a logical fit. doesn't the alternate timeline start with the attack on the Kelvin?

^ That's the premise that's being sold.

I say Nero, in trying to go back in time, slipped up and not only went back, but also hit an alternate timeline, and it's that timeline that he screws up, not the primary one.

if that's what you think, might that not address many of your objections to this film? you could just pretend that this movie and all subsequent trek stuff happens in some other timeline from the original. it seems a pretty nice distinction, whether the timeline started befor or during the movie, but heck, if that resolves your concerns, more power to you.

Dammit, people, there is no "timeline." This is a re-imagining of Star Trek. They're not sweating minor or even major details. They're doing their own version of Trek. All of this discussion is like trying to reconcile the storyline of the Brady Bunch tv show with the 1995 movie. Or maybe trying to find "canon" contradictions between Batman 1989 and Batman Begins.

Lets see now, its a tv/movie series. The producers, wardrobe department, and FX people decide what the uniforms and ships look like. How many times over the years have they changed everything? The uniforms were different between the Pilot and TOS because they WANTED to. Not because Gene said, "We can't do that, its not canon. People are gonna complain forty years from now. We're gonna make a bunch of movies where we change the Klingons and Romulans, give everybody a delta insignia, and change the warp factor scale. We can't screw this up people, the fans believe this is real life. If we don't make sure all the details are explained, they're lives will be ruined, because they don't know how to, "Get a Life"!

If The Cage Doesn't happen in this new timeline, can I *keep* the DVD I've got? I don't want Abrams knocking down my front door...

Bad robots are rounding up Trekkies and putting them in internment camps. There's a secret Trekkie resistance. They're guarding the sacred canon of Star Trek.

I've been informed that the locked cupboard in Hollywood that is the home of The Star Treks has so far remained unmolested and un-broken into. So it's clear that The Star Treks is safe! And therefore all related DVDs, videos, towels and pez dispensers are safe as well.

But the very moment that Evil Movie Makers break into that cupboard and start attacking The Star Treks with their nasty old de-canonizationary discombobulator we're all doomed. You may very well see your DVD collection vanish before your eyes!

This was Almost the same argument about ''enterprise'' back when it premierd! (Everything looks to advanced!, but it's from a point in history wev'e never seen, whose to say the NX-O1 didn't inspire ''AKIRA'') People will only except the Kelvin if it looks like something out'a ''Flash AHAHAH! Gordon''!:p How sad.

I won't accept it unless it looks like Flesh Gordon.

That part is well said!! :techman: This Star "Wars" Trek or "Star Trek Lite" is all that it seems. A dpppelganger to the superior original. Cast, crew and starship alike.
That's right, but as its success appears more and more likely the relentlessly negative are going to grasp at straws.
What success? A week or so in the top 5 films?

Nah, it must look like Sex Trek.
There ''was'' a SEX TREK comic, there was even a ''SEX TREK:TNG!''

A week or two at number one for starts. Gee, wouldn't that be nice for a Star Trek film in this century?

We will just have to wait and see. Don't hold your breath waiting for the movie to fail. ;)
God, Darwin, Xenu, Satan!?, you owe me one! PLEASE! don't let this film fail!:(
