Countdown #3 official review thread [Spoilers]

I don't have the time right now to write a detailed review for #3 but I'll give you pictures from the pages and leave the rest for tomorrow or others who have read it.

So here are some of the most important moments :

[Out of concern that too much of the comic was being reproduced here, several images have been removed. - M']

SalvorHardin, sorry to do this, but that was a pretty substantial chunk of the issue which was posted here. To avoid making anyone nervous about copyright issues, I have removed all but three. Let me know if you'd like to choose a different selection than the ones I've left here, but let's keep the number of pages displayed down to just a few and go with verbal descriptions for some of the other goings-on.

I enjoyed this for what it is: a 22 page piece into the motivations of the main villan, with some backstory filled in

some take this trek thing too seriously! Its just a show, people!!! ;)

I think there should be a ban on the word "fan-wank/fan-wanking." So what if something geared towards longtime/serious fans actually serves its purpose?

So there's a Space Jellyfish now? Octopus vs Jellyfish - the epic ocean battle fought in space.

Is this what Star Trek has been reduced to? Aquatic life fighting amongst the cosmos?

Quick, we can have fun with this.

Space Manta Ray vs Space Shark.
Space Dolphin vs Space Fish.
Space Whale vs Space Eel.

Shit, maybe the probe from Trek IV was just a Space Aquarium. Space Sea World or something like that.

the Destiny books take place in 2381. This comic book series takes place in 2387. Can it not be possible that these differences between Countdown and Pocket Books happen between 2381 and 2387? It's possible that Worf could leave Starfleet sometime between 2381 and 2387 and become a General in the Klingon Empire.

If it was only that, then yes, it is possible. But we've established by now that Countdown and ST Online share a universe, and that Online is incompatible with the current state of the 'real' Trek (see above)...so that's why I believe what I do.

And to those who claim that since Trek novels aren't canon, they don't mean anything: Well, Online is 'only' a computer game, and Countdown is a comic book. So how canon could *they* be? ;)

I hate to take this topic a little more OT, but how can STO and Countdown be incompatible with the current state of Trek? STO takes place in 2409. The books are only up to 2381. The last canon Star Trek (Nemesis) took place in 2379. Pocket Books may in fact slowly bring the characters more in line with Countdown and STO as the book series move forward.

Star Trek: Online has been releasing backstory stuff on their website for the years between Nemesis and when STO occurs. With it you can see that they have taken some parts from the novels but not all of it. Stuff like the split in the Romulan Empire following Nemesis but they don't use the events of the recent Destiny trilogy where the Borg invade the Federation, instead leaving that out and making up a new continuity as they go along from the early 2380s onwards.

Personally I don't mind all that much that they are doing this. If they didn't then that would somewhat lock the novels into a certain path that we would know about. I can't say I'm a big fan of the recent post-TNG novels but it would be even less inviting if they had the next 10 years mapped out for them due to STO. It also allows STO some freedom to set the scene for the game, they don't have to deal with the complications of having to work with the Pocket Books people to organise their timeline and what they can/should do. It gives more freedom for both sides to be creative, I don't see how people can argue against that.

I was hoping to get this issue yesterday myself but due to transportation problems I didn't. I hope one of the comic stores I go to frequently in my area has a copy left at least. I would hate to have to miss this issue and wait til next month when the final comes out and then the tpb comes out. Grrr...
I didn't get to see the other images that were posted but the story looks good. Nice to see Geordi playing a role in this somewhere finally. So the Jellyfish is I guess what will be taken into the past instead of the Enterprise? That seems interesting.

I agree. I enjoyed the comic, enjoyed it a bit more, a lot more, really really intensely...and then suddenly not at all. About an hour later, I had the sudden urge to pick it up again and start all over...

I tried really hard not to read too many spoilers here, and not to jump ahead and peek at the last panel in the comic shop this time, and had a thoroughly enjoyable time with it!

People who complain that this is too fanboyish need to remember that, for many people, this may be their first ever ST media tie-in and, without at least a few recognisable characters (and tech), it would be the story of Nero, Old Spock and a whole buncha people of whom they've never heard.

AquaTrek?:D

I like that Geordi has become the Burt Rutan of the 24th century!! Just makes me smile!

RAMA

It is, but am I the only one finding it lame that it's actually called 'the Jellyfish'?
No, you're not. It does sound strange.

I was actually reminded of this fellow ...

But I like the design of that particular ship.

It looks a little bit like a jellyfish (in the comics, anyway), and if Laforge had anything to do with it, I'm not surprised it has that name (it's consistent with his characterization).

Neros borgified ship seems off - not sure if the whole ship is totally different, or just has the front end piece. The last couple of panels made it look like an all new ship....
