My Opinion of Dwight Schultz Just Went Through The Roof!

meh, another right winger whinging about 'liberal' Hollywood. The difference is that Schultz can write and he can admit that there are some good liberals, aside from that it's the usual culture wars rubbish.

No, he's speaking of his own experiences. And I, quite frankly, applaud him for speaking out. I believe him when he talks about mentality out there and he comes across as very courageous and not willing to follow the herd to be accepted or get a job.

You can't dismiss his experiences...or his courage in light of being vastly outnumbered by liberal wack jobs.

^ To be honest an actors personal politics is not wroth anything when it comes to judging them on their abilities. Schultz made Reg Barclay work and did a good job on the A team. So I really don't care if he's on a one man campaign to free Hollywood from the 'Liberals' because it does not change my opinion of him as an actor and that's the only thing that matters to me as a trek fan.

I agree that political ideologies SHOULD be separate from the craft, but I can only say I found it refreshing to see an actor speak out as a conservative rather than a salivating neo-Marxist.

As a conservative, I believe this should be recognized and applauded.

All too often, we are subjugated to the political opinions on the other side (not just from actors, but from musicians as well!) -- so why not take this opportunity to present the conservative viewpoint?

Jus sayin...

Work and politics do not mix. It was a mistake for Schultz to think he can defend his positions with his colleagues and superiors. And it's too bad, because he's a great actor and could have gone much further than he has.

It's nice to see you are completely fair and not prone at all to hyperboles in your view. I could have mistaken you for someone who could be actually interesting to discuss with.

Oh my god, subjugated to hearing the other side? How dare they! Go listen to Rush Limbaugh, if he's better suited to your tastes. Geez.

Hollywood is a left-wing town; we all know this. And when Sean Penn kiddingly said "thank you, all you commie loving homo-supporters" when he won his oscar, and everyone laughed, I wonder if he really meant it...Even Robert De'niro joked about all the straight guys Penn had played and he won this year for playing a Gay activist in a movie that no-one outside the academy saw...

I actually lean left but even I can see the liberal slant in hollywood. But I accept it as payback for what happened to the left-leaning actors, and or gay actors, and all the crap they went through with McCarthy and Hoover in the 40s-60s

Depends on where you work.

However, it's kind of hyppocritical to mention this when the uber libs in Hollyweird have been getting away with mixing "work" and politics for years on end.

And the lowest form of politics at that...

Apparently, McCarthy was right. Certainly the wack jobs in Hollyweird today are proving him right post mortem!

Apparently, McCarthy was right.

And with that, all credibility is shot.

You are being narrow minded on this one. Many of those people on that list did indeed turn out to be Communist; that can not be denied. How he did it, and what he intended to do with those lists, was wrong, very wrong. That too, can not be denied. Will Geer, GRANDPA WALTON, was Gay, and communist, and was on the list. So, McCarthy was right about him....though it doesn't make what McCarthy did right at all..

Methinks that perhaps we are reading too much into this. Schultz is basically complaining that there are too many Liberals in the TV and Film industry which precludes him from getting employment. He does admit that there are decent (in his own mind) liberals who will treat a conservative with respect and debate honestly with him in terms of political discourse, Paul Newman is cited as one of these.

This may be a fair point but I'm not a American and our right wing (in the UK) does not engage in Culture Wars. This may deny me the ability to relate to Mr Schultz (plus the fact that I'm far to the left by his standards) but I can see the argument as merely a moaning session towards actors who have different political viewpoints.

It's all sound and fury signifying nothing in my opinion but doesn't detract from Schultz's acting or other non-political roles.

This is the point where you lost me. Your bias is showing just as clearly as is that of the entertainment industry.

I appreciate his writing, but come on now. Artists seldom lean right, and there are good reasons they don't. You'll find moderates and libertarian types, but seldom a straight-up GOP supporter, especially a Christian Conservative like Bush. And even if it were not so, defending a President who was responsible for the torture, and murder, of prisoners, ummm yeah. That might make you feel like an outsider, Mr. Schultz.
It might have something to do with that particular President being diametrically opposed to that which artists and musicians tend to represent.
Fuck, it's like complaining about feeling ostracized for being a pro-gun control Socialist who works in a gun shop.
Or like marveling at the conspiracy of sticking your hand in boiling water, and getting burned.
All that said, it takes balls to write a blog like that given the atmosphere. And Barclay might have been my favorite TNG character. I sincerely hope Schultz hasn't been denied opportunity because of his politics.

I thought it was an interesting article. I am sure there are a lot of conservative actors that are afraid to admit it for fear of being blacklisted. It is a shame that Dwight wasn't allowed to audition for a part because he had different political views. So much for a "free country."

Exactly my point Ro..."some animals are more equal than others"...

;)

He'll be on the "hit list" now that he's come out as a conservative.

He's a brave dude.

Sucks. He puts a lot of nuance in his performances. Personally, I think he's A-list in talent. To turn someone like that aside, not even audition, because of what the lunchtime coversation might be like, is lame and unproffesional.

I doubt there is a witch hunt of conservative entertainers in the USA otherwise why is Rush still broadcasting? I call hyperbole on this I'm afraid.

^ I don't know much about Rush, but maybe he is still on the air because of conservative radio stations. Similarly O'Reilly is on TV because of conservative Fox News. This doesn't translate over to the film industry (unless one considers religious films, which are few and far between and can't offer much work to actors).
