Titan Concept Pic

Hey Praetor, Nice ship! This shuld have been the U.S.S. VOYAGER! much ''BETTER'' looking then the Intrepid.;)

Thanks, miraclefan. Voyager was actually a big influence on me.

And Bolian, I'll see what I can do about finishing my old mesh. I still have it, it's just that I'm all thumbs on Blender since I gave it up for a while when I lost most of my hard drive a couple years back, so I'm for all intents and purposing starting my skills over.

I really like that design, Praetor, only wish I could do that kind of orthographic work other than my mad chickenscratches

Thank you, Arkady. It's really not that hard, especially if you use a ruler and draw it out physically first. At least, that's what I do. I may be Generation Y (or whatever the hell generation a 23 year old falls into) but there's still no substitute for me for good ole pencil on paper. When you do it in Illustrator, you also have the advantage of ruler guides.

hehe at 39 im nearing generation ancient

hmmm, dunno if I can afford Illustrator, but we will see

I still do most if not all of my early concepts with good old pencil on paper/ pen on paper. You are right there is no substitute.

This really brings back some memories.
Tried the basic shape myself back in ´06 because I was so intrigued by it.

Hope somebody will give it the full treatment some day.

HOLY CRAP!

That's awesome! Is that Maya? I'm very flattered. :D

Seeing it like that without pylons makes me curious to try a version where the nacelle pylons sweep downward at about 15 degrees and the nacelles hang below.

Thanks but it actually was just a quick test back then to see if the "lower lip" extending from the deflector would look that good in 3D as well. Sean´s design has grown on me over the years but I honestly still prefer your shape.
And that´s an old version of 3D Studio Max. And there should be a law protecting people from the abomination Maya calls modeling tools. ;)

If you want to use Blender for those experiments just PM me the email address where I can send the .3ds export of the old raw geometry (I´m sure Blender has its own MeshSmoothing algorithms).

That is awesome, lennier1! You should continue!

Praetor, would you happen to have a high-res copy of your original orthos you could share, or no?

Thanks but it´s an inactive project and with everything that´s going on there wouldn´t be time.
But I´ve given the old control mesh to Praetor so he can use it for his experiments in Blender. Although as you can see my rendition differs slightly from his 2D layout (e.g. the shuttle bay area was supposed to be shaped like Voyager´s).

Maybe I´ll revive it someday but I won´t make any promises.
In the meantime make sure to visit Praetor´s DeviantArt page to learn how this design came to life and to see his intriguing design for the captain´s yacht.

Geez, now I'm blushing again. Thanks. :)

In other news, I've discovered the copy of the drawing I had on my PC is corrupt so I must go dig out the CDs. Also, I have yet to figure out how to import your mesh without warping it. Operator error on my part, I'm sure.

Edit: found the CD, including, among other things including a WIP Illustrator file of the yacht that I forgot I started, and some independent large views of the ship:

You can see all of my technical errors in all their glory. *nervous laughter*

(I also have a hand-drawn cross section somewhere that I had just barely started making an Illustrator file of, as well as the only Illustrator drawing I made of the arrow version before I abandoned it.)

Thanks but converting between different 3D applications can often involve the need for some cleanup afterwards if closed-source file formats are used (after all, the import filters are made by reverse engineering existing example files).

Check your mail for a file in the OBJ file format. Maybe that one works better for you.

PS: Any chance you could send a high-res pic my way as well in case you encounter the backup file again? Thanks in advance for considering it. ;)

Gee, thanks. :)

(I've never actually tried converting anything before.)

Hopefully those I just edited in might do you for now, but I'll send you something else too.

I am definitely going to clean up the design a bit, maybe revise a thing or two. I was going to give it impulse engines on the saucer and make the impulse engine a second shuttlebay once but ran out of time. Something I'm considering anyway.

Thank you for sharing the high-res pics. These definitely make it easier to see the exact shape of several details.

As for the topic of "modifications gone wrong" from your mail, there have been worse examples, although the following only showed up in one of the magazines:

Apparently someone combined the old studio CG Enterprise with the saucer, pillar and pod from Bonchune´s CG Nebula (both models can be seen up close in the "Starship Spotter" book).

Eek. That might not be so bad if the pod weren't quite so big, or if it were more in the location of the third nacelle of the 'AGT' ship.

Glad you liked the high-res pics. I hope the hex escape pods were appreciated. I liked those. I'll post something of the yacht when I get her done.
