Trek 11's ship IS the Enterprise

No it doesn't look beautiful. (Yes in my opinion- of course that's the point of the BBS- to give our opinions).

The CGI is terrific and it all looks well done. The Kelvin looks great, but the more I look at that enterprise, the more I don't like it.

The saucer looks too flat. The nacelles are too close together, too tapered at the end and too fat at the front. The secondary hull is too far forward, and the undercut below the shuttle bay is too long. It's really an odd mix of TMP, TOS, and "other".

As another class ship, and with some tweaking, I can see the potential in this ship. But not as it is.

Again, great CGI! Thanks for the update Smegger56.

New Enterprise looks great from those angles. I've had the first one as my wallpaper for a few days now.

It looks pretty good...just the second one down makes it look a little jut-jawed. The rest are great.

The thing with each Enterprise is that there are some angles which compliment it, and two or three that make it look awkward. I think the very first image they released ( in October?) was not a flattering one.

That's totally the Enterprise. :techman:

Really, and I wonder why they chose that one - every shot of the thing that's actually from the movie has looked great, and it didn't take Richter long to come up with a half-a-dozen good angles on it.

I do like the ship now more than I did when I first saw it. I'm beginning to wonder if my aversion to the ship was because my baseline of what I think the ship should look like was based on the 1966 TOS Enterprise.

I saw the nacelles and said "too big". I saw the the space between the nacelles and said "too narrow"...but now when I look, I say "the nacelles actually do fit the proportions of the ship" and "the narrow spacing between the nacelles does in fact juxtapose well with the diamater of the saucer and the overall length."

I think originally I was biased toward the original, since that was all I knew. If the original is the "ideal", then everything else will never be able to compare. However, now that I'm looking at it with fresh eyes, I can see that the thicker nacelles may actually look more proportional than the original, using a 2009 aesthetic baseline.

Styles change. Architecture from 1966 can be dated -- even if the overall architectural style can be appreciated. I can appreciate the style of that 1966 Enterprise, but that doesn't mean that it fits with a 2009 aesthetic.

If I was wisked away by a time machine from 1966, and all I knew about clothing styles was based on 1966 fashions, of course I would have an aversion to today's fashions. But once I spent some time in 2009 and got to know this era better, I would realize that the fashions of 2009 are just as valid as the fashions of 1966, only different.

I agree that the nacelles are too close (which emphasizes how bulky and big they are compared to the 1701's nacelles of the past), and that the secondary hull sticks out too forward.

However, I also agree with the earlier point that each Enterprise has an angle that makes it look awkward. The E-D is probably my favorite incarnation, but there's a shot of the forward section of the ship, camera tilted up, that's in every TNG intro, and it makes the saucer look obscenely huge compared to the rest of the ship. Bad angle for sure, but the E-D looks great when it flies by. I imagine that's no different with the new Enterprise.

And with all that said, I'm tickled to death that this vessel takes some of its cues from the TOS-movie Enterprise, right down to the impulse engines. Lovely touch, I think.

So yes, all in all, I accept this as my Enterprise.

I've tried to look at the new E with an open mind. After taking some time to get used to her, I can now only give her two thumbs up. I'm looking forward to seeing what this movie has to offer.

A good example, because the producers initially ordered a number of "stock" shots from ILM based on the angles used to photograph the TOS Enterprise. The angle you're describing is one such.

Over the first year of episodes as the Paramount effects people worked with the model and added shots to the library, they discovered the angles at which the E-D looked best - very different in many cases than those that flattered the original ship.

WOW. That is one stunningly gorgeous ship.

I just hope the actual version looks as good.

Beautiful work, and it'll look amazing on the big screen. Unlike the TOS version.

This girl is looking BETTER N BETTER everytime I see it! Notice I have already changed my avatar to one of the pictures!

Well, Polaris, Richter just knocked one of your Enterprises off of my wallpaper. But take heart, one of yours first knocked off one of his. Ah, the circle of life. ;)
Even in Richter's renditions, it's obvious they sacrificed some of the design's inherent grace for a retro or "this is an older version" look, but she's still a bonny vessel. I'm converted.
