Vonda McIntyre talks Trek books

An interesting blog post from Vonda McIntyre, in which she writes about her Trek novel experience, can be found here...

This was very interesting to read after her non-appearance in Voyages of Imagination. I almost want to print up what she says here and fold the pages in with my copy of VoI.

She seems unaware that most of the old restrictions against recurring characters and continuing storylines and other things have mostly been history for a long time now.

Interesting stuff. Would love to see her do another ST book, but suspect that probably won't be happening anytime soon.

When she said she had an idea for a title for Star Trek II and said it was Demon Warrior...that was a joke right?!

Great find! Thanks for sharing the link! I loved her book Enterprise. I remember buying it when it first came out.

I think she was saying that was an early proposed title she'd heard, not one she'd come up with.

And she's a bit off -- the working title for the film was The Vengeance of Khan, not The Revenge of Khan.

Interesting because German ST-"meta"books offering background information about the movies also state "Revenge of Khan" as an early title for STII...

It's good to see this; her absence from Voyages (love that book!) was keenly felt.

Like many others,"The entropy effect"is a favourite of mine.
Same goes for the movie novelisations,it's hard to explain, but the Enterprise crew of Ms.McIntyre's books seem more....cosmopolitan,more like real citizens of a futuristic, enlightened society than any other depiction that I've read.

Ahh, can you be absolutely sure of that? This is a first hand source, after all, though there's been 25 years for memories to become vague...
So, while I suspect you're right, as I trust your knowledge of this stuff, it's possible that Vonda McIntyre could pull a gold-embossed proof cover reading 'Revenge of Khan' from the bottom of her filing cabinet, and show that the title went through one more variation.

(BTW, in case you've guessed it: yes, I am a Doctor Who fan, and was during the period in the 1990s when all sorts of people would pause an interview about stuff they'd done on it during the 1960s by saying 'Hold on, I kept some paperwork about this, it's in a drawer somewhere, I'm sure I can find it...') :-)

Yeah, though Vengeance of Khan was a raised working title, I seem to recall Revenge of Khan was also in play, and Nicholas Meyer said that it might come a little too close to Revenge of the Jedi (as it was then) for George Lucas's liking. This was in Movie Memories maybe?

I just checked my copy of Shatner's Trek Movie Memories and his interview with Meyer said that Meyer thought that the title Vengeance of Khan would be too similar to the title Revenge of the Jedi so they changed it to Wrath of Khan.

Thanks for posting that, Turtletrekker!
I sorely missed Vonda in VOTI. This answers a lot of questions. I'm going to print it out and stick in VOTI .

No, she says...

" (I had a great idea for the title, so great that I can’t remember it now.)"

then...

"I didn’t actually care what they called it since they weren’t going to use Demon Warrior (I knew I’d remember that eventually)."

Did I imagine it, or did Ms. McIntyre say she's willing to write another Trek book? I'd think that might not sell too badly for Pocket.

Considering her track record with novelizations, maybe they should have contacted her about Trek XI (she did not sound too interested in doing more novelizations, but she would have six more months than usual to finish this one)

Actually, the person contracted to write the novelization, Alan Dean Foster, has reported that he's working under an extremely restricted timeframe on account of studio paranoia about information leaks.

Fictitiously yours, Trent Roman
