Call of Duty: World at War Map Pack announced!

Twilight

Vice Admiral
Admiral
.... and it's available in a few weeks! ("March")

http://www.vggen.com/news/news.php?id=9296

3 new MP maps + some Nazi Zombies content:

From the press release, the maps are:

Nightfire: "war-ravaged Berlin"

Knee-deep: a Japanese camp in a jungle

Station: A subway station

(obviously these are modified ports from the Single player campaign, if you can't tell by the descriptions)

This is a tradition carried over from CoD4 DLC - ports from single player campaign maps ... but don't worry - they turned out to be amazing maps even though they were familiar ... and Treyarch have proven themselves brilliant map designers if the W@W maps we have now are any indication...

Also:

The Call of Duty: World at War Map Pack 1 will also expand upon the fan-favorite four-player co-op Nazi Zombie bonus mode with "Verruckt" (Zombie Asylum) - a fourth map that features more weapons, new Perks-a-Cola machines, electroshock defenses and endless, attacking legions of undead.

Read about this today, I'm looking forward to it. It'll be cool to get some fresh killing grounds for the regular games, and I was grinning from ear to ear reading about the new Nazi Zombies map, with added perks. I just wish that they'd hurry up and release a patch for the current map glitches. I can only hope that they've thoroughly tested these new ones so they can't be exploited by cheaters.

I thought the Nazi zombies was the best part of this game... not like the rest of it was bad, or anything, but... I'll have to consider whether the price is right, since the zombies is the only thing that makes me come back to it.

^ Yeah, same. The competitive multiplayer is, like CoD4 before it, broken and unplayable unless you wish to devote countless hours of your life to unlocking game-breaking perks and so forth.

I'll buy the map pack just for the nazi zombies...depending on the price.

Unplayable? How do you figure? It doesn't take very long at all to level up and unlock the "game-breaking perks" if you are even remotely competent at the game, and most of the best perks are achieved in the first 30-40 ranks anyway.

The only problem I have with the multiplayer is the aforementioned map exploits, and the cheating gits who use them. Although having said that, I haven't noticed anyone really using them that much recently. Perhaps the novelty has worn off. Either that or the cheating bastards have been reported so many times that they've been banned from the servers.

Still, it would be nice to have them fixed anyway, just so the option to cheat isn't there anymore.

Man, isn't that the truth. Just this past weekend I saw something I'd never seen before and I still haven't figured out if it was a glitch or somebody had hacked something. Because after HOURS of playing, I'd never seen this.

I'm on the map with the church steeple and tanks (Outskirts maybe?). I'm on the ground near the steeple when I look up and see a guy on the roof of the building across from the building and I'm thinking, How the hell did he get up there? Moments later, I saw how. I'm in the vincinity again, and there's a guy FLOATING in mid-air between the steeple and the roof I was talking about. And all I could think was "You cheating sonofabitches!" Really kills this game for me.

While many of the "under map" cheats were fixed with a patch recently, the "elevator" cheats like the one you described require a different kind of fix and aren't likely to go away anytime soon.However-when someone uses that or similar cheats they are black dots in a blue sky-making them ez targets. Very ez. You just have to incorporate checking that location into your sweeps as you move. I like when they go up there-it gets me that much closer to finishing my Gehwehr. There are similar cheats in Castle, Hangar and Cliffside. They don't really help, though, because they leave you exposed(except Cliffside, which dumps you onto a huge rock) and anybody with something other than the shotty can get them down out of there.

As for the game being "unplayable" - just played Left4dead last night for first time. Now there is a screwed up game! While COD5 is subject to the vagaries of the human players, if you take that into account its easy to excel at it. Like most games of this nature-teamwork will prevail in the end. As long as you talk and try to help your teammates you can win.
The game has brilliant maps, annoyingly real gun performance and a perk system that makes it worth your while to go up levels. If there is a drawback, its those ball-less wonders who don't have the guts to push to Prestige. These people sit at 65 Level and use top performance weapons on you-then, more often than not, they mock you after the game if you lose, despite you being a fresh-minted Level 12 with no real weapons perks available. Otherwise, its a blast.

Well as much as they irritate me using stuff like this, I have to admit, for a brief moment, it was kind of interestiing to watch since I'd never seen that before.

But in general, I can't stand glitchers. Readers Digest version of my previous rant on this subject: I'll take my ass whuppins, but just do it fairly.

CoD4 and CoD:WaW are the most user-unfriendly online games on consoles right now. Not only do experienced players have the benefit of, umm, experience, and knowing each map inside and out, but they also have very real, very tangible benefits bestowed upon them by the game itself. It makes the game impossible for newcomers.

The first '30-40 ranks' represent dozens upon dozens upon dozens of hours of playtime. And from my experience trying to get to level 14 just to see what the other game modes are like, it's not an endeavour I would care to pursue. The game is frustrating beyond all belief. On the rare occasion you do land a kill, you get blown up by a grenade thrown by the supposedly dead person, which seems impossible to escape. Other than that you're just a human bullet shield. Killed and kiled and killed again, over and over.

I'm sorry, but it's a game, not a fucking cult. I don't want to dedicate my life to levelling up my Call of Duty character, nor should I have to. I just want to pick it up and jump online and shoot things for a few minutes at a time whenever the mood strikes.

It's broken. And while I respect that you disagree (and understand why some people disagree), you're not going to change my mind so don't even try ;)

Not only do experienced players have the benefit of, umm, experience, and knowing each map inside and out...

You're gonna get that with any game that you don't play regularly. There isn't anything that can be done about that other than, y'know, play the game more.

...but they also have very real, very tangible benefits bestowed upon them by the game itself. It makes the game impossible for newcomers.

That's an overexaggeration. The game isn't impossible. I was a newcomer at one point, so were all the people who play it. Sure, it's nice to have all the perks and such, but they're hardly gamebreakers, they just give you extra things to toy around with. They don't make people invincible or anything, and they can't make a bad player any better. If you suck, you suck, no matter how many perks and weapons you've unlocked.

The first '30-40 ranks' represent dozens upon dozens upon dozens of hours of playtime.

Simply untrue. The first 20 ranks are so easy to reach that you can get that far in 5 good games or so. Hardly "dozens and dozens of hours".

The game is frustrating beyond all belief. On the rare occasion you do land a kill, you get blown up by a grenade thrown by the supposedly dead person, which seems impossible to escape.

Ah, Martyrdom. One of my favourite perks. :D

Again, I'd say you're exaggerating the point there.

Other than that you're just a human bullet shield. Killed and kiled and killed again, over and over.

Again with the exaggeration. Sure, it can be frustrating as hell when you are having a bad game, and you don't seem to be catching any breaks, but that's just what makes you play better. Same with any shooter though.

It's broken. And while I respect that you disagree (and understand why some people disagree), you're not going to change my mind so don't even try ;)

I'm not necessarily trying to change your mind, but I was under the impression that this was a discussion board.

That's the problem when you cut me off halfway through a sentence: you rob me of all context, and that just isn't fair. It goes without saying that experienced players are well schooled in the various locales and mechanics of the gameplay. My point was - before you cut my sentence up, anyway - that this is a natural advantage to being experienced in any game, and this natural advantage is compounded by the perks system. Together these things create an environment that is hostile for newcomers. I think you knew that, but I s'pose it's more fun to try and make me look stupid, yeah? :)

And you're right, this is a discussion board. It just so happens that I have no interest in discussing this in any great detail. I've stated my position, formed as it is after many hours of playtime. You dissecting my posts line by line just to tell me over and over that I'm exaggerating and/or wrong will not change any of this nor will it incite me to debate it with you because...I just don't care enough to do that.

I'll emphasise again that I respect that you disagree and it's great that you enjoy it - I wish I did as well. It's just not for me, and I'm not going to be shy about saying so just because it's popular at the moment.

That hadn't occured to me.

Oh, yes it had:

My point was that you can't use other people having more map experience than you, as an argument against COD. It happens with most MP games these days.

But you are exaggerating. If it was as bad as you say, no-one would play the bloody thing.

I'm sorry, but that is absolutely not what I was saying. The only way you could possibly think I was saying that is if you cut my sentence in half - which, incidentally, is what you did :)

But you are exaggerating. If it was as bad as you say, no-one would play the bloody thing.

Are you on the hunt for an argument? How many times do I have to say that I respect that you and other people like it, but that it isn't for me?

This is surreal.

I'm with you, Servo. As for COD being the most unfriendly games on consoles-I use my Halo3 as a coaster. Anytime I drill someone in the head with 36 bullets and he walks away I'm done.

I just went prestige on Monday night.(Rolled over to Level One for you noobs), and at my current pace I'm getting about 1 level per half hour-about avg for a so-so player. Interestingly, I used the default Thompson at Lvl 1 and was the high scorer that round. Far from a human bullet shield, I came out on top. I used the terrain features to duck and hide, avoided walking out in the wide open spaces and assumed everyone was out to get me-because they were. Isn't that the way you play ANY FPS?

As for perks-sure, I use them. So does everyone else. Facing 6 guys with camouflage when you are level 9 and continuously on the enemy radar can bite at times-but if you know they are keying on you, you can change the paradigm. Personally, I start carrying live grenades without throwing them. In other words-you deal with it!

As for Martyrdom - play Hard Core. Only a fool or an idiot uses Martyrdom in Hard core Team Deathmatch. 3 team kills and you are gone. I LIKE enemy players that have Martyrdom on in Hard Core!

Bottom line-any game can be fun if its your "thing"-and any game can suck if you don't give it a proper chance. Some games have stronger learning curves than others-and require more effort to learn. You get out what you put into it.

I can't be arsed to edit my post to compensate for yours, so I'll just do a new one.

And I say it doesn't. Perks do not make a player. You can still kick seven shades of proverbial out of people who have all the perks, even if you hardly have any yourself. It all depends on you.

I think you knew that, but I s'pose it's more fun to try and make me look stupid, yeah? :)

Yeah. That's exactly what I was going for.

And I'm saying that hasn't been my experience. Do you want me to just blindly agree with you?

Exactly. Perks only work as well as you can use them, and they are not the be-all and end-all of winning a game. Using the terrain, and being smart helps more than anything. That, and being able to shoot. ;)

Martyrdom comes in very handy in HC Free-For-All or Headquarters games.

I'm putting across my opinion, and I directed my comments at you because I was discussing points you raised in your post. I couldn't care less whether you agree with me or not, but your comments are fair game for discussion the second you hit the 'submit' button, whether you personally want to discuss them or not.
You are the one being defensive about it all, and you are the one who keeps insisting that we're arguing, even though we're not. Or, at least, I'm not.

If what you have posted here has really been you're experience of the game, and you haven't enjoyed it, then fair enough. However, it certainly hasn't been my experience, nor does it seem to be the general experience of the 180,000+ people who play it on Xbox Live every day, so I thought I'd chime in with an alternative opinion (again, being as this is a discussion board), especially seeing as you seemed to be stating yours as fact, by using terms like "It's broken" and "unplayable".
