NFL Discussion - 2008-09 Playoffs

Chargers would have resulted in a better draft pick for my Pats, but that's out, so hopefully Arizona plays in the Superbowl, at least. Arizona/Baltimore would at least be a different matchup.

Thanks to the Giants loss, our Pats first round draft pick went from 24th to 23rd.
As for the Chargers, don't forget that we hold a 2nd round draft pick from the Chargers. Had they won, well, the prospects for that draft pick, in terms of position, wouldn't have been great.

Speaking of Pats draft picks, I also believe we have a compensation draft pick from the loss of Asante Samuel (3rd round I believe), with the following providing some specifics.

"In order to qualify for the comp equation, a player must have been a true Unrestricted Free Agent whose contract had expired or was voided after the previous season (i.e., he cannot have been released by his old team); he must sign during the UFA signing period (which ended July 22 last year); if he signs after June 1, he must have been tendered a June 1 qualifying offer by his old team; his compensatory value must be above a specific minimum amount (or, possibly, have incentives in his contract that would put him above the minimum); and he cannot have been permanently released by his new team before a certain point in the season (which seems to be after Week 10) or, possibly, before getting a certain amount of playing time, unless he was claimed off waivers by another team."

And franchising and trading Cassel might potentially give us yet another 2 more picks. :)

Pittsburgh is now the favorite to win the Super Bowl, according to the online oddsmakers. Here's roughly the respective probabilities of the remaining four teams going all the way, as given by the oddsmakers, following today's games:

Pittsburgh 36%
Philadelphia 27%
Baltimore 21%
Arizona 17%

Those odds makers are still at this point shafting the Cardinals?

You know if someone had taken the Vegas odds on an Eagles vs Cards NFC championship game I no doubt think you could've cleaned up.

Both games today were VERY interesting. The Eagles we all knew wouldn't be intimidated, in large part because they won the previous meeting. But what's more important is how htey didn't lay down and die when Robbins came up with that interception. They pressed and harassed and pushed and ran and threw and did it all. Donovan McNabb has to be one of the happiest guys in the world right now, because he's playing well and they are winning.

The Steelers... kept running and running and eventually wore down the Chargers. That was one of the best games Rothelisberger has played in a while, an dhe wasn't exhibiting any effects from the concussion. Willie Parker seems to be healthy and fresh. Slid win all the way around.

I wouldn't mind a Pittsburgh/Philadelphia Super Bowl, myself. But then again, I'm IN Pennsylvania.

Go Steelers!

The Chargers are out! This means I can stop cheering against teams and start cheering for someone! I may root for the Steelers to go all the way... there's just something about them that I like.

First, I want to congratulate the Chargers for a good season-- they never gave up.

Second, I want to say...

Looks like we'll get a gladiatorial-level bloodbath for the AFC championship. Would certainly rather have faced the Chargers, but this is, admittedly, the more interesting match-up. :techman:

BRING IT ON! This should be a great game!

I live in Pennsylvania, and I loathe the prospect.

If a Super Bowl could end with both teams disqualified ...

Fortunately, since Arizona will defeat Philly, it won't be an issue. :techman:

Because it will bring the incessant chatter about a pair of teams I don't like to a fever pitch. You get sick of hearing about the Eagles and Steelers living in Pennsylvania.

This could end up 3-0, 7-3, something like that. It's going to be great.

And Arizona playing at home for the NFC Championship? I'm pretty sure that's one of the Biblical signs of the apocalypse....

So the Ravens are going to take a stab at beating the Steelers?

I hope the Steelers demolish the Ravens. I want nothing good to happen to Ray Lewis.

I'll be rooting for the Eagles next week. If it can't be the Giants then it might as well be the team they lost to.

Didn't get to watch all of either Sunday games (wanted to get outside and play before the cold moves in), but I was happy to see the Giants lose (love seeing Eli Manning struggle). I was kind of rooting for San Diego, but by the time I got back in, it was all but over. Oh well, at least I won $150 on my numbers and the matchups next week should be good.

I'll be rooting for Arizona and Baltimore, but I'm expecting it to go the other way.

I have a good friend in Philly so I'll be rooting for the Eagles. Although if the same Arizona team that has played the last 2 weeks shows up and not the season ending version then Warner & Co. could win.

Go Steelers.
