Does God Exist? Let's ask the Advertising Standards Authority!

But as for whether or not Christians would be upset by Buddhists, they wouldn't and I'll tell you why. The extreme Atheistic Movement (which this is done by) is extremely hostile toward believers and specifically Christians and that's what this is about. Do I think they shouldn't have right to say what they want? No, but I'm not so naive as to believe that their motives for this ad is pure. This is clearly inflammatory and that was the point.

Can you please explain to me why you consider this ad to be inflammatory? Is saying "The probably isn't a God" to the general population any more inflammatory than saying "There is a God" in a country like Britain which has quite a lot of non-believers.

The second part of the message is

"Now stop worrying and enjoy your life"

How is that inflammatory. To me it is just good advice.

As I said in the thread in TNZ -

Frankly, if I saw such a bus with a such a slogan it would cheer me up. I have been bombarded with Christian messages all my life and I would find it pleasing seeing one that reinforced my beliefs rather than being against my beliefs. If atheists are the only people such an ad helps that is good enough for me.

The extreme Atheistic Movement (which this is done by) is extremely hostile toward believers and specifically Christians and that's what this is about.

Well, Christians are pretty much the same way toward non-believers
so I say go for it. I hope this case gets slapped down. They have just
as much right to make this ad as any phony "God" ad.
That's nonsense and shows just how hostile you are. Most Christians are live and let live and don't care how you live your life. The difference is that they pray for people like you with love in their heart.

The case should be slapped down but not for the reasons that you believe. The case doesn't have any merit.

It's inflammatory to attack the beliefs of 99% of the population. Can you honestly not figure out why that ad would offend some people? Don't insult your intelligence or mine. And don't use generic unverifiable phrases like, "in a country like Britain which has quite a lot of non-believers." That's weak.

Again, I made the point that it can be as offensive as it wants but I find it curious that you didn't comment on my suggestion for a billboard that suggests that most of the terrorists in the world are probably Muslim.

-Shawn :borg:

99%?? Where do you get that from? Only about a quarter of English people are CHristians.

It's inflammatory to attack the beliefs of 99% of the population.

I believe that slightly over 30% of the British population class themselves as non-believers/agnostics/or atheists at leasty according to this site.

Again, I made the point that it can be as offensive as it wants but I find it curious that you didn't comment on my suggestion for a billboard that suggests that most of the terrorists in the world are probably Muslim.

Because that is clearly attacking Muslims as a group. Saying "There probably isn't a God" isn't attacking any particular religion.

Both sides really need to take a chill pill.

These atheist ads aren't a threat to me. Why should I care if they're there? My faith can survive their presence. People don't even have to look at them.

Christ's message is out there too, and I firmly believe that *it* is powerful enough as it is - we don't need to silence atheists.

Thats how they officially identify, but not what they believe.

http://www.vexen.co.uk/UK/religion.html

Half of all people polled in the UK said they didn't even believe in a god. And I actually live here you know ;)
Here's your problem and the Chicken Lady's problem: you're both citing unreliable, biased sources that coincide with your perspective.

It certainly is not attacking Muslims as a group, it's defining who terrorists are and quite accurately I might add. What part of this are you missing?

They are both inflammatory statements.

I totally agree with you and if you've read my earlier posts you'd see that I don't think that there is anything wrong legally with the billboard and if I were an attorney in the UK I would jump at the chance to defend them for it. But I call them like I see them and I try not to let my personal views interfere with my objectivity.

What I don't particularly appreciate is the hostility and accepted hostility by individuals against believers.

I cant wait to see their faces on Judgement Day when we all stand before God Almighty and He starts to show them their life and He gets to the part where they buy these ads.

You can't argue with the church attendance figures, hardly anybody practices the religion they put down on the 2001 census that the link you provided is quoting and you can't take a single box on a form that says "religion" as identifying people's beliefs. DOn't be ridiculous.

390,000 people identified as Jedis.

It's pretty clear that you are determined to believe whatever suits you about this country though, and it's also pretty clear from your attitude throughout this whole thread who the hostile one is ;)

You are joking right? First off... "people like you" I am not an Atheist.
I am simply not religious. Whether or not there is some form of higher
life form in the Universe is still up for discovery.

Second, that couldn't be the farthest thing from the truth. Very few
practicing Christians out there are "live and let live" and are continualy
finding ways to make themselves an issue for the rest of the civilized world.

I cant wait to see their faces on Judgement Day when we all stand before God Almighty and He starts to show them their life and He gets to the part where they buy these ads.

Christianity at it's finest.

Can you please address me by my proper username.

if we go by the British census 15% of said they had no religion. That is 9.000,000 people. That disproves your statement that 99% believe in a God.

It certainly is not attacking Muslims as a group, it's defining who terrorists are and quite accurately I might add. What part of this are you missing?

Only if you discount the bombers of Sri Lanka and Christian terrorist armies that are active in many regions of Africa. Before the invasion of Iraq the majority of suicide bombers in the world were Tamil Tigers and most suicide bombimgs occred in Sri Lanka. It would be correct however to say that most terrorist acts aimed at the West are carried out be Muslims.

There is a significant difference in aligning an entire group with terrorism by association (when in fact only an extremely small part of that group are terrorists) than it is tio put that "There probably isn't a God" on the side of a bus.

It would be more comparable if a message stating "Most Muslims aren't terrorists" on the bus.

That's a non-starter. 'Probably' is a get out for any claim. Like 'probably the best lager in the world'.
You know, for a moment I thought that this thread had been Godwinn'd, and in the most awesome and nonsensical way I've ever seen.

I don't know where you lived all your life, but in this reality, lots of Christians are quite intrusive in others' lives. Maybe they are full of love, but I would prefer if they kept their distances. Like the abusive boyfriend that hits you because he loves you so much.

Can you please explain to me why you consider this ad to be inflammatory?

Being unpopular is not the same thing as inflammatory. "Probably there is no God" may be unpopular, "Your make-believe sociopath man in the sky is a bunch of crap" is inflammatory. Note the fine distinction between the two.

Personally, I think it's good to see a nice, upbeat alternative to all the oppressive religious propaganda that abounds.

A christian accusing someone of citing biased and unreliable sources. Do you see the humour in this?

My local churches all have signs saying all sorts of things - things about "Jesus Saves" and all that. Can I report them ?
