Well, as James Blish used to have Spock say:
"A difference which makes no difference is no difference."
"A difference which makes no difference is no difference."
I would have preferred this too. I dunno, this really dampens my enthusiasm a bit. Just seems like an easy out to me.You know, to be honest, I get what they were trying to do with the "alternate universe\some things change because of time travel" thing.
But I don't really like it, that they chose to explain the visual or other changes and deviations from canon like this.
I would prefer they had not tried to reconcile things at all.
I would prefer they had gone the way of "It's a movie made in 2008-9 and we simply decided to update the old designs and simply disregard or change some canon facts. Deal with it."
FINALLY. Perhaps now the canon cry babies will shut the hell up.
Just because he's saying that doesn't mean you won't be able to make it fit.FINALLY. Perhaps now the canon cry babies will shut the hell up.
That's just plain rude and uncalled for...and makes you appear to be just as bad as the folks your insulting.

As for this New Version of Trek...
Personally, I'm kinda disappointed now.
I was looking forward to perhaps being able to intertwine and fit this story into what has gone before, like WE do with all the different aspects of Trek that have come along.
But this is a whole new ball game, he essentially saying that there are Two OFFICIAL TREK Universes now and something about that just doesn't feel right.
Oh well.... My enthusiasm has certainly been dampened also.
Anthony: So everyone in the prime timeline, like Picard and Riker, are still off doing there thing, it is just that Nero is gone.
Bob: Yes, and you will notice that whenever the movie comes out, that whatever DVDs you have purchased, will continue to exist.
I just wasted a few minutes reading that, the interviewer asked the same question over and over and over again and then, just to be sure, he asked it AGAIN.Interesting Q&A over at Trekmovie. Pretty much confirms a lot of what we've been thinking the past weeks
The full thing can be read here http://trekmovie.com/2008/12/11/bob...-movie-fits-with-trek-canon-and-real-science/

But I carry this picture of William Shatner as Kirk in my pocket, and he keeps fading in and out of view...
Reading that line feels too much like a cop out. I would have preferred then to tie everything up - using Spock going back to put the timeline on the right track instead of just saying 'meh, alternate universe'.
I can't recall a point, since the details of this movie began to leak out, when the notion of the Trek Universe being reset to "normal" at the end of this film seemed credible.
It's not impossible to do, it might not match perfectly, but it would preserve a history thats been well recognised throughout it's various productions which I believe would be worth carrying on.

If a new alternate timeline is created when some changes the past then what is the point of time travel to fix it? because whatever was done in the past wouldn't effect the current timeline, just create a new one. So why bother trying to stop it at all?

I think it's pretty accurate and plenty called for.
I remember when I didn't understand why some Trek fans think other Trek fans are weirdos. Now I get it.
I'm as devoted as you get, but some of yall are are like babies. I think they are doing something pretty clever and quite frankly, generous, with this new timeline thing and some of you guys sound as petulant as ever.
What JJ Abrams truly could to be saying is to kiss his ass cuz he really doesn't need any of us "devotees" but. We're gonna watch it anyway and you know that. We're gonna complain regardless and you know that too.
So it's not an origins story then. It's about a completely different set of characters in a completely different Star Trek universe...
