You guys. "Star Trek" is obviously a reboot on the face of it. The ship looks different, the back story for some of the characters is different.

The ship looked different in TMP, and none of the characters had much of a backstory to begin with.

When they make Spock a tempermental bonde chick, Sulu an old, bald alcoholic, and Vulcans look like us now, then it's a reboot.

In short, JJ and Co. have been lying through their teeth about what they're doing from the beginning, and they are continuing to lie to us every time they trot out this "not really a reboot" crap! Not only is this blatantly dishonest, it's also disrespectful of the fanbase to such a degree that, had he tried this crap in the not-too-distant past, there would've been protests outside the Paramount gates with JJ being burned in effigy.

What I really find dismaying is that so many so-called fans are not only okay with being lied to, they're actually applauding this fraud.

"So-called". See, that's really annoying. Because I am a HUGE ST fan. As are many on this forum. I do not feel disrespected. In fact, most of what I've read from JJ and Co. seems to be trying to walk the tight-rope of what is respectful to Trek Classic and remaking the story for a whole new audience.

How literal-minded does one have to be, to have taken anything these people have said as "lies?" It's been clear to me from near the beginning, based on what they were saying, what the approach they were taking to this was. One just has to pay a little attention.

It's going to be satisfying to see the self-appointed gatekeepers of "fandom" put in their places.

I wanted Paramount to make an exciting and highly profitable Star Trek movie that would reinvigorate the franchise. My concept of how to do that was in a late 24th-century setting with new characters and a new cast, making it largely character-driven and not introduce massive sets that would make it difficult to follow with a new series but rather set the stage for a successful next series. I see no need to trash canon just because there are recent examples of money being made rebooting other franchises. With this J.J. approach, what chance is there for a new Trek TV series?

Because they've gone through a very elaborate, and tedious, song and dance about how it isn't a reboot and that "there's a canon explanation for everything". At this point, it's looking like that "canon explanation" is that canon has been wiped out.

As long as you know what the movie is and what it isn't by the time the it's released, what does it matter what was said in an interview a year prior? No one's tricking you out of your money -- it's not like they're producing trailers featuring Jefferies' 1701 being put together in Earth orbit, only to pull the rug out from under you as soon as you're in the theatre.

In fact, if the trailers make it so obvious to you that the new movie is a reboot, and if the producers who had a hand in those trailers are saying it isn't, the obvious explanation is that they and you simply have a different definition of what constitutes a 'reboot'. It's not a well defined term, by any stretch.

As long as the story is good and it retains the essense of the original, the set dressing and incidental changes matter not to me (Trek watcher since 1966).

The only think that will really bother me is if at the end they will show none of it really happened - it all happened in Spock's mind. They did that on an episode of Enterprise with Hoshi and the transporter. I think it is a cheat and lazy storytelling. I miss the cerebral stuff, that face it, we're never gonna get.

When I see it I'll believe it. As yet, everyone I know/heard of seeing it has loved it, even long time Trek "haters".

It will only be the fanatical non-fans like those on this board who are going to avoid it for any particular reason. And they don't really matter in the end.

That said, I consider myself a long-time Star Trek fan and I can't wait for this movie, mostly because I'm eager to see young hot Captain Kirk. Although I could have done with a late-24th-century show on a totally new ship.
