The New Xbox Experience is here - your thoughts

Please don't take that as an attack TemporalFlux, just curious about why you felt that way.

It really is just the way it feels for me. I don't think I could give sufficient quantifiable evidence to win an argument; I'm hard pressed to play every game on each system.

For me, I think it bridges back to the original XBox compared to the PS2. We had the usual PG-13 fare going on with PS2, and suddenly we had Halo with characters casually screaming "Oh shit!!!" every minute or so. For me, that was probably the defining break between the two systems; and I haven't seen anything since to change my opinion.

Certainly there are games that cross systems (like Grand Theft Auto), but those games aren't really a signature of a system. For Nintendo, the signature is Mario; for XBox, the signature is Halo; for PS, the signature is less defined, but the best candidate is probably Metal Gear; and Metal Gear is a teen franchise in my eyes (somewhere between Mario and Halo).

In the end, it's all just opinion; I'm not claiming I'm right or that someone else is wrong. But I think we can agree it's a bad fit for XBox to drift toward something cutesey that Nintendo popularized. XBox shouldn't be cutesey; it goes against its brand.

Yes, they will still stream on PC just fine. But you can't watch them on an Xbox. It sucks. The Netflix thing is one of the things I'm most looking forward to for the NXE. I'll just have to watch any Columbia movies I want to see on my PC instead of my TV.

Well, to me Netflix doesn't exist so... whatever.
They were supposed to come to Canada but I guess that'll never happen. :p

Nope, apparently it's being released at 2am PST (5am EST) ... (according to Major Nelson's twitter)

Just three more hours or so for me I guess (In Iowa, so central time.) That is, if it will actually be up at midnight PST.

Edit: Just saw the 2 A.M. thing. Well, there's no way I'm staying up that late. I'll catch it in the morning.

Hmm... I always thought the XBox was a more teen oriented console JUST because of what you mentioned. Nothing personal, but I don't think an in-game character screaming "Oh, shit!" necessarily makes something feel like an adult game. To me, it seems more fitting for teens, because I can picture them snickering BECAUSE there's an in-game character swearing, and the teens are usually when kids are experimenting with swearing anyway.

Also, I've kind of seen the Halo following as kind of the next step up in age group from Super Smash Bros. multiplayer deathmatches.

But, as said before, I probably think this way because I'm a PlayStation 3 owner ;)

I own all three consoles, and the Nintendo come across as the kiddy console, and not only because of their franchises games. I'd say this was a large reason they fell from No. 1 with the N64 and the Gamecube. And now that they've embraced a different market of gamers, they've climbed back up.

To me the PS and XB are the same.

NXE is in the process of being 'rolled out' to all Xbox Live members. Major Nelson says it could take a few hours for everyone to get the prompt. That link also has a few things you can/should do when you get the update :)

Since I happened to be up, I updated my 360. Holy frak, did you see the 28 terms of service plus the extra stuff below that?!?!? It was longer than a novella.

I'm in the process of making my Mii -- sorry, but that's what it is -- right now.

Yeah, well limbs are obviously an improvement.

But the 360 doing this smells the same as the PS3 with the trophy points.

I don't mind, as long as it's good.

Which I think it is.

Mostly, I'm just impressed that they've eliminated the laggy crap you get when navigating the blades.

Mine still hasn't prompted, I'm hurt :(

Edited to add: I got it like 1 min after I posted this. I wonder how much of it was already downloaded, because it only took 1 minute to download the whole update.

The PlayStation brand doesn't lack signature brands - it has a lot of them. And therein lies the reason the PS1 and PS2 so thoroughly annihilated any and all competition. The PS2, for its part, did (and does) and outstanding of job of catering to all tastes, both popular and niche. That is something Nintendo and certainly Microsoft have never done and probably never will do. 360 owners mainly want to shoot people and yell at each other over Xbox Live. Wii owners just want to play WiiSports. PS2 owners want to do both, and roll Katamaris, slay Colossi, sing karaoke, role-play Japanese-style, and so on. It's yet to be seen if the PS3 can emulate this, and it's a console which hasn't really forged an identity for itself yet, but there doesn't seem to be any hurry because none of the other guys are really doing it better.

Well, I've had no trouble creating a Mii60 that looks like me. The new interface is nice - but it's suddenly taking a lot longer to build a music playlist, and, worse, it now does it alphabetically by track title instead of by track number! So all my playlists on both the hard drive and the MP3 player are fucked when played on the 360!

ETA - Oh, not all. Just the three biggest ones, that I most commonly listen to... It seems to keep single albums in the right order

And for some reason it now plays the Pirates of the Caribbean soundtracks in reverse order - AWE, DMC, then CotBP...

Looks like there's a small update to get the new base firmware on then a bigger one to get the rest of it on.

I'm going to fight the urge to make a female Mii60 simply because I don't need to be called a fag online.
