Universal Home Video has announced an extended edition of Waterworld which stars Kevin Costner and Dennis Hopper. The 2-disc release will be available to own from the 4th November, and should retail at around $19.98. Both the extended version (2 Hours 57 Minutes) and theatrical version (2 Hours 16 Minutes) will be presented in 1.85:1 anamorphic widescreen, along with English Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround tracks. The only confirmed extra feature right now is the trailer. Stay tuned for further details.

This could literally sell tens of copies! :p

...but it did produce one of the greatest lines I ever read in a review, from a CT alternative newspaper. The reviewer said that Waterworld was so bad and had so affected his opinion of Costner that he was retroactively downgrading Dances With Wolves from five stars to four.. ow!

...maybe for Dennis Hopper completists? It is some of the best scenery-chewing this side of Russell Crowe in Gladiator... :p

Oh Dear God, this movie was already a half hour too long, now there's 41 MORE minutes?

This would only be worth it if we got to see the look on Costner's face when they told him the set sank.

I've been begging for this ever since Waterworld was released on home video (in '96)!

The extended version (like a lot of extended versions of movies before DVD) aired on network TV (in this case I think it was NBC). It actually made it a better movie, by filling in some of the plotholes, further developing some minor characters, and extending some of the action scenes.

So yeah, I've been waiting for this version of Waterworld for quite some time.

I've been begging for this ever since Waterworld was released on home video (in '96)!

The extended version (like a lot of extended versions of movies before DVD) aired on network TV (in this case I think it was NBC). It actually made it a better movie, by filling in some of the plotholes, further developing some minor characters, and extending some of the action scenes.

Didn't realize there was an extended version. :eek: It was on some digital cable channel a few weeks ago, and I couldn't tell if anything had been added to it. The running time was around 2 and a half hours. :confused:
 
I saw the extended version on BBC a few years back and I have to say that it did make the film better, which isn't saying much, given that it wasn't very good to begin with, but it's something at least. What stood out most in my mind was the slightly altered ending, which for me added an interesting and perfectly logical twist to the "island".
For those who don't mind being "spoiled":-
They find Norgay and Hillary's plaque at the top of the cliff.
It only amounts to a few seconds of footage, I wonder why they cut it in the first place.

I actually can't tell if you're being sarcastic here! :p

The only cut I've seen of Alexander is the first DVD release, labeled the "Director's Cut", and it made me beg the gods for the sweet relief of death.

Does "the Final Cut" genuinely improve the film?

I was a big fan of Hopper's scenery chewing as King Koopa in Super Mario Bros. I might be up for more here.

IIRC, the first DVD release of Waterworld was pretty crappy. No extras and a very shitty transfer. (I think it was part of the same class as David Lynch's Dune. Considering Dune got an Extended Edition re-release, as did another big Kevin Costner film, Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, I suppose we shouldn't be too surprised that Waterworld has come next.)

Actually, it's kinda hard to find, but they did come out with the original theatrical cut of Alexander on DVD first. It did so poorly that they soon glutted the market with copies of the Director's Cut, which was a major departure from the theatrical cut. (I think the major purpose of the Director's Cut was to make it more of an action movie.) The Final Cut is, IIRC, closer to the theatrical cut but with several added scenes that flesh things out a little better.
 
I liked the movie, and want to see the extended version, therefore I am looking forward to this.

But that-thing-you-hid-in-your-spoiler is 7 miles high - even if every single piece of ice melts on the whole planet the sea level would only go up about 100m tops.
 
^Actually, I found an old copy of Starlog where one of the screenwriters admitted that, even if you melted every single piece of ice on Earth, sea levels would still only rise about 48 feet. (It would still be an ecological catastrophe but nowhere near as apocalyptic as the movie would have us believe.) Frankly, Dr. Noah's plan to flood the Earth in "Our Man Bashir" was more plausible than this.
 
Well that's a problem with the plot of the whole movie. But IF the water level can be raised that high, that would about the only scrap of dry land left....though I can barely imagine how that would happen or what it would do to the atmosphere. After all, no more trees...but then allot less animal life expelling CO2.
The only thing I can think of is a massive cometary bombardment and even then, that's a LOT of H2O.

The director's cut is actually shorter than the theatrical cut, and then the final cut is longer than the theaterical cut.

Revenge is the only other director's cut that I know is shorter.
