Joaquin Phoenix Shocks With Retirement Announcement

Yahoo :wtf:

The 34 year old and two-time Oscar Joaquin Phoenix, stunned E-Online reporter Jason Kennedy with the announcement that he would be retiring from acting

Phoenix is apparently giving up acting to pursue music, a passion of his since he learned to play guitar to play the role of Johnny Cash in 2005.

Big shock and a huge loss to Hollywood and the fans, no doubt about that. I would say one of the best actors never to win an Oscar and even if you don't like his movies, his acting has never been in question and I do hope one day he returns.

He was great as Johnny Cash; however, Jamie Fox hit it out of the ballpark with his portrayal of Ray Charles.

And as soon as he needs a few bucks he will make a big announcement about his comeback.

See ya Joaquin, I enjoyed a few of your movies but there will be several dozen people to take your place.

Music career? Good luck with that...

Hollywood types...ya gotta love it.

I always thought he was a really strong actor but as much as I enjoyed him in Walk The Line he hasn't been a part of a movie that's really floored me yet. Shame to hear he's hanging it up and that I probably won't get a chance to see him do something really great like I think he's capable of.

Gladiator wasn't good enough for you? :vulcan:

I wouldn't take anything the guy says right now too seriously. I heard the interview and he sounds completely awful. Apparently several people that met up with him backstage that night said he was slurring and mumbling and obviously on something. You can tell in the interview. It was sad really.

Eh. He's a good actor, but it's hardly a great loss. Now that he's made some money, he's going off to do something else he really loves; that's great. I'm glad he's enjoying himself. But I hardly consider it earth-shattering news.

He should form a band with Keanu Reeves, Kevin Costner, Russell Crowe, Kevin Bacon, and Bruce Willis and go on a huge super tour.

Gladiator was fine. I didn't think he was the best thing about it though.

Unless Phoenix thinks he's a pro athlete when it comes to money, he should have plenty of bank stored away to retire and send his great grandchildren to college.

Don't forget Dennis Quaid!

Honestly, I haven't followed his career in great detail. He's had a few roles that I enjoyed and I think he's a good actor, but I can't say that I'll miss him a great deal.

Yeah I saw the interview as well and it's hard to take him seriously in it. Especially since Casey Affleck (who was with him) seemed totally stunned and confused. Affleck's reaction I actually found kind of funny.

Good for him. He wants to try something new. I've done different jobs over the years, don't see why he shouldn't.

"I enjoy the fame and fortune that comes with being an actor, but I really wanted to be a waiter."
