Yes! Parents TV Council targets CW's "Supernatural"

The right wing Parents TV Council, which monitors television for objectionable sexual and violent content, last week named "Supernatural" it's worst television show of the week for its realistic depiction of the cannibalistic feeding of a rugaru/human creature. Outstanding. Books often become more popular when they're banned. Gotta love the free publicity. Usually the PTV council only targets "Gossip Girl," "90210" and other teenaged sexual crap for its indecency.

Good going, Supernatural. This isn't your cute, fluffy, non bloody disappear in a puff of smoke Buffy violence. They couldn't cite it for sexuality because the brothers rarely ever take off their shirts.

Supernatural is special. They don't take none of Dawn Ostroff's crap. And we love them for it.

Still, I understand that they still have to include a certain amount of pandering on rare occasions, so when that does happen I just roll my eyes and get over it.

Following the death of their father, the Winchester boys now face the demons they’ve accidentally released from Hell.

The show is promoted as a thriller and certainly meets that standard. Violent death caused by ghosts, spirits, and other supernatural forces are frequent and often gory. In one episode, a man who has been cursed by a rabbit’s foot slips on a beer bottle and falls backward against a counter only to have a barbeque fork go through his head and come out his mouth. His body is shown twitch for several minutes as he dies.

This supernatural violence is explicit and occurs frequently. As a result of these themes, this show is rated red for violence. Foul language is also frequent, with “hell,” “bitch,” “ass,” “damn,” “crap,” and “son of a bitch” being common. Poor language earns this show a yellow rating. Sex is never portrayed, but sexual innuendo is commonly spoken by Dean Winchester, mostly in passing comments about attractive women he sees.

Supernatural is not recommended for children of any age. ...

In their defense, they only say "crap" because the mean old network won't let them say "shit." And Dean's only had a few off camera one night stands that he refers to....and that threesome back in season one that he winked about to Sam. He's responsible with his condom usage. Hell, Buffy got laid more often on camera.

Buffy? Graphic violence? Buffy's violence was all nice, neat, and clean. No fuss, no muss. I've become too accustomed to Supernatural. The PTC must have missed the season two episode that had the "once per season" quota of each brother stripping down. It was "Heart." Man, Padalecki works out like a demon. That man has huge shoulders, chiseled chest and biceps/triceps to die for. Nice abs, too. There was no keeping the nice werewolf locked up in a cage every full moon on this show, like on good old Buffy and their "nice" werewolf, Oz. Supernatural went there. Sam shot the pretty lady he'd slept with in the head, at her request. You can't keep someone in a cage forever. It's a ridiculous thought and she'd already killed. I was glad they went there. I don't remember the PTC getting all over that one. Supernatural must not have been on its radar yet.

No, Smallville is deemed more of a "clean" show by this group. No commentary about potential stupidity. At least it was deemed "clean" in the "Buffy" link Spiff posted. I can't speak to what they think of it today. Smallville couldn't get cited by the Parents Television Council for violence if it tried. Supernatural showed a guy fall backwards and get impaled by a serving fork. Lots of nice, graphic blood, too. Hell, Dean even plunged a supernatural knife into an angel's vessel. The angel who saved him. Dean has a bit of a problem with faith.

Hell, I'm surprised the Parents TV Council didn't go into collective vaporlock and have a holy conniption over the entire mythology of this scene. This was a pretty bold (and much truer) interpretation of Mr. Angel if you consider all the biblical texts.

EDIT: Well son of a gun, the PTC did issue a warning for Smallville. For Smallville! That's hilarious. I'm so accustomed to the ghoulishness, blood, and blasphemy on Supernatural that the very idea of Smallville being cited makes me laugh so hard my sides hurt. Talk to me when Clark shoots a woman in the head after he takes her to bed. Or has one night stands with a waitress. Or burns some poor monster to death because he has to do it. Or Welling learns to act.

Their objective was to classify television programs and inform parents about shows that are appropriate/inappropriate for children.
I kind of agree that young children shouldn't watch the show.

They aren't saying that adults should be ashamed of loving the show.
As far as I can see, they haven't launched any campaigns against Supernatural.

I know you're big on "show competition" for some reason, but this is a little ... cracky.

Idiot parents need to get off of their dead asses and determine for themselves what is appropriate....aw shit I did myself in with the first two words of the sentence. What a great way to make TV boring. We have PBS for ballet and documentaries about fractal geometry. The only interest TV should serve is MINE. Double helpings of Dexter mayhem and Petrellicest, please.

But not nearly vile enough, which is why it was boring. They're making up for lost time now, tho!

How about Reaper, they should be having conniptions about that one. Nice kid who decides to go to work for Satan.
