War Machines DVD promo

Ooooh. I can't wait.

I've got a big soft spot for Hartnell's era (and Troughton's too) since I love old, B&W, sci-fi. I got the Time Meddler last week and loved it and I know I'll love this too.

And as for Trial and Four to Doomsday... is that old news? Because I just looked and see Trial out for Sept R2 and Oct R1 with Four... as a TBA.

Wow, that was fricken' awesome! I've seen the serial before, and they've really managed to make it seem fast-paced and exciting! It's an okay story, but it really looks thrilling here.

Wow, that promo actually made the serial look good!

Too bad it isn't. :p

The War Machines is only good for introducing Polly and Ben and that classic shot of The First Doctor standing defiantly. Everything else is rubbish, especially the disgraceful send off for Dodo.

That IS an awesome shot, isn't it? :techman:

Yeah, that was weird wasn't it? What happened? Was the actress pregnant? Contract negotiations?

Yup. Iconic, even. :D

From A Brief History of Time (Travel):

It was initially planned that Black's scripts would introduce a new companion, called Richard (or “Rich”) to replace Steven Taylor, who had been written out in The Savages, the story immediately preceding “The Computers”. Rich, who was developed by Lloyd and Davis during March, would meet the Doctor and Dodo in a nightclub and join them in their travels. By mid-April, however, Lloyd and Davis had decided to make a clean sweep of companions, and Jackie Lane's contract was extended only up to episode two of The War Machines. The imminent exit of both Steven and Dodo from Doctor Who was revealed to the public on April 26th.

As you may or may not know, there have been some DVD schedule changes, with Trial swapping release dates with Four To Doomsday. There was also some shifting of release dates earlier in the year, meaning the "Coming soon to DVD" trailer for The War Machines (which comes out on August 25) never got released.

So here it is, courtesy of the Restoration Team:

That's odd, because it is on the Four to Doomsday check discs. I guess that means that, with War Machines now coming out before Doomsday, they're going to take it off the actual release.

I always found it rather neet that the story basically foreshadowed Pertwee's era, with the Doctor playing scientific advisor to a military organization.

The war machines were a pretty damn goofy design though.

Great trailer - needs an epilepsy warning really.

I like the story. There's the great novelty value in seeing Hartnell on contemporary earth, and having a malevolent supercomputer in the GPO tower really appeals.

Not necessarily. WOTAN could have been simply saying "Doctor who?" because it actually doesn't know who The Doctor is (because he's not of Earth).

I'm REALLY excited about this release! If memory serves (and I'm talking about a memory from 42 years ago, now), this was the first Doctor Who story I ever saw. Must have hooked me good, eh?

:guffaw:

That's exactly what I thought.

That trailer actually looked awesome and if I hadn't already seen it I would be very excited about it's release. There are a lot more releases I would like to see but it is a piece of history. I will still buy it.

EMH : Also, it's a dumb line and can be half-humanly ignored...
There's that, too.

Oh, I will eventually buy it, too. I fully intend to own every single Doctor Who serial no matter how bad it is.

I dunno if they'll take it off, but they might well replace it with a trail for Trial. And at the very least it isn't appearing before the story comes out.

Would there be time for that though? Four to Doomsday is supposed to be hitting shelves in a little over a month's time (and this is a revised time given the Trial delay) - is there time to get the master tape, replace it with a Trial trail, create a new glass master of the disc, print off however many thousand they need to do, pack it and get it shipped off to the various distributors.

Since the test discs are going out it means that the expensive glass master has already been created - is an incorrect trailer on what is presumably an otherwise perfect disc really worth the cost involved in replacing the master?

How's your collection coming by the way?

I've got 33 classic serials on dvd now, having just picked up the Time Meddler and Black Orchid.
