It's all over the AP wire. What the hell is up with this? Bale's been married since 2000. I've never even heard a whisper of anything like this. Of course, that doesn't prove anything, but still....yikes.

Oh, the scenarios ... they shake him down for money, he says no, they call the police.

Actually, it's all over the news. I read an article on CNN.com.
Of course it is.
They kept calling Bale's publicity people for comment. They won't talk to the press. If they were at least offering some half ass excuse, like it was a "misunderstanding," I wouldn't be inclined to be suspicious of Bale's behavior. If his family is trying to blackmail him, why not say so in the press and get a little positive publicity that doesn't paint him as an abuser? If someone publicly accused me of beating the shit out of my mother, I'd defend myself.

I hope it's not, either. Anyway, there's finally a public denial in a statement released by his lawyer. You can't let accusations that serious linger in the air without answering them.
No one has said he beat her. "Assault" could mean he shoved her, threw something at her, grabbed her, whatever. Not that those types of behavior could be excused, either, but if it was a serious offense, I doubt they would have let him go to attend a premiere.
Clearly, there are some serious family issues involved, and *surprise* the actor is not perfect. He obviously lost control and did something wrong. He came back to the station as instructed and he will have to face the music.
I can only assume that he's too ashamed or embarrassed to discuss it publicly right now.
I feel sorry for both him and his family. There must be a lot wrong between them for things to turn out like this.
I'm sure he is but, embarrassed or not, you can't let people accuse you of that without answering. It's too serious a charge if people are allowed to believe he's beating up his mom or sister. "Assault" is a word with serious implications, especially when left to the imagination.
Yeah, assault as a legal term doesn't necessarily mean "beating the shit out of". In fact in this case I'd say it certainly doesn't since if she'd turned up at the police station with visible injuries the police would likely have arrested him right away.
I'm surprised it took so long for a public denial. In this day in age, everyone learns these big rumors within an hour or two. I work in an office, about 3 people have asked "So did you hear about Bale?" to me, and It's not even 2 o'clock here yet.
But, until I see footage of his mother or sister stating they were assaulted, I'll give Mr. Bale the benefit of the doubt. Mostly because I want to be able to enjoy Terminator 4 next summer without thinking John Connor beats up his mom.

Exactly. Assault doesn't mean "beating up." If the two had noticable physical injuries, they'd have cuffed him on the spot.
In this case, I think keeping one's mouth shut and out of the public view is the best thing to do. If he really lost control and did something like that, he clearly needs to pull himself together before letting someone shove a microphone in his face.
He screwed up, big time. It's really not anyone's business, except his family's, so there really isn't anything to say. I can only assume he'll address it when he's ready.
