Futurama The Beast With a Billion Backs [SPOILERS]

I agree that BwaBB was a little directionless and really didn't have a good plot or storyline. Best part was Bender with his kid and the Robot Devil. Robot Devil always provides a good laugh or two.

I think Hawking has the best lines in the movie.

Steven Hawking: Welcome. I'm the pickled head of Steven Hawking on a way cool rocket.

Steven Hawking: In conclusion, I understand nothing about the anomaly even after cashing the huge check I got for writing a book about it.

applause

Professor Farsworth: I know this anomaly is terrifying. But as scientists, is it not our sworn duty to seek out knowledge even at the cost of out very lives?!

Steven Hawking: No.

Heh...funny stuff. And honestly, Hawking's voicebox device has been around for 30 years or so and could EASILY be faked. The fact they actually asked him to voice himself (yet again) was tremendous.

Of course, Hawking's disability makes it extremely hard to "read him" for things like humor and such, so I really appreciate that he seems willing to have a bit of fun with it. :techman:

A better example would be global warming. In one episode it's called a scientific hoax (along with second hand smoke), in another it happened but got cancelled out by nuclear winter, and a third episode dealt entirely with the planet being threatened by global warming.
Another good example is Star Trek. Fry mentions Star Trek at least one time before "Where No Fan Has Gone Before" without any repercussions.
The reference was from Hermes to Fry when explaining DOOP. Hermes states that DOOP is "like the United Federation of Planets from your Star Trek." Of course, we can retcon that there weren't any repercussions because they weren't on Earth at the time but on the newly built space station that was to house DOOP's HQ. That is before Zap lasers the thing in half.
Anything can be worked out with enough hand waving. Of course, with a show like Futurama, it doesn't really matter one way or the other.

Yet, everything that happened with Fry and his freezing in BBS, along with all the other elements including his dog and nephew, still seems to track with the series.
I agree completely.

BwaBB was funny and entertaining, but I can't help but wonder... what the hell happened with Nibbler? Also, I hope that they move closer and closer to Fry's destiny and how Leela is "the other."
I'm sure they're saving Nibbler's return for a special event. Like the near extinction of a species and comes back just in time to eat them all. ;)

Between The Next Generation, The Simpsons, and Futurama, Hawking has always struck me as someone who knows how to have fun. :D

I'm watching it for the first time right now. I absolutely love the first movie, but this one... well, I'm about 45 minutes in and finally the plot has started to happen. Seriously, nothing happened for that entire time. I'm so disappointed.

Fun, and a worthy addition to Futurama. BwaBB flowed much better than BBS, albeit much slower. (Yivo took 45 minutes to be introduced!) I preferred Bender's Big Score on the whole. It had a more epic story befitting a movie, and was by far the most quotable Futurama story ever.

The main plot of BwaBB was fairly average, with a few good laughs. The real comedic gold came from all of the side stuff with Weeernstrommm!, Deathball, and all of the cameos.

A few observations:
Bender's first born son is the darkest moment in all of Futurama. :guffaw: (I wonder if he was the kid Bender had with Crushinator.)

The "Lost Adventure" was great! Makes up for never having played the game.

Most of the deleted scenes should have been left in. ("Turns out his name was Scruffy.")

Yeah, that bit was a bit weird, but strangely appropriate of Bender.

I wonder if we ever learn more about that kid...

He actually has a pretty wicked sense of humor.

well, look how fucked up the poor bastard's life is. If he didn't have a good sense of humor about it, he'd have wheeled himself into a swimming pool a long time ago...

Got a chance to see it last night, and BwaBB was more like the Futurama I want to see. Vast improvement over Big Score; I don't understand the complaints (of course, I also don't understand why anyone would like Ang Lee's Hulk, and there's alot of that going around TrekBBS too).

Anchovies are extinct, not sardines. They are different fish.

What he said. :)

Fictitiously yours, Trent Roman

That sounds like today's news! It is a hoax, what the news media lies about, but is happening and can get canceled out by nuclear winter, but then happen again in the future after the robots fart.

Global warming has happened on this planet since before humans, how do they explain that? Oh yeah they don't and just pretend it's something new. If there is a nuclear winter that would delay it from happening again, but it will happen again and nothing we do will stop global warming.

I also hate the Hulk, but I hate all Hulks so I'm biased. :)

I just watched the The Lost Adventure and I have to say that was pretty good. It felt like a typical Futurama episode with some great jokes and a fun story. Of course the ending with the infinite loop of them dying can't quit into the rest of the series, but it's still worth watching.

Very enjoyable but with still the problem of padding/meandering. Futurama is best at with one-hour length.

Still, four stars outta five.

I love uit when they complained about who wrecked their ship and it was actually them, LOL

Yup. That broke poor Fry's brain.

I also loved:

"Oh no! The reanimator!"
"Bummer! We'll have to be careful not to die from now on."
"You had to say that."

*SMASH*

I'm afraid I didn't like it much. The story was bizarre and disquieting and sort of fell apart in the final half-hour. Thinking about it in retrospect, it just doesn't feel right -- Yivo essentially raped everyone in the universe, but afterward it was treated like a cute romantic comedy and shklee was portrayed sympathetically. That just isn't right. If they wanted to play it that way, then they shouldn't have gone for the outright monster-attack angle with everyone being forcibly ententacled, but should've presented it more as a seduction, with Fry joining with Yivo voluntarily out of loneliness and persuading others to come along with his "Pope" speechifying. Having it be coercive just made it impossible to buy into the last act about Yivo "dating" the universe and winning them over. They crossed a line here.

Also, as they pointed out in the commentary, they pretty much avoided showing any children getting taken over by Yivo, but they made it clear that the entire world (or universe) had been evacuated of all living beings, so implicitly Yivo was a child molester too. That's another crossed line.

Even aside from all that, I was just unconvinced that everyone in the universe could be romanced into giving up their entire existence. Not to mention that the population of the universe seemed to have been reduced to a few hundred in those last scenes, enough to fit onto a single space pirate ship.

I didn't like the Fry/Colleen thing either. The last movie gave Leela and Fry a major moment in their relationship, pretty much declaring outright that they were meant to be together and would never love anyone else, and then they turn around and hook Fry up with another woman without explanation? That doesn't make any sense. On the commentary, they even admitted that they knew it didn't make sense but they just hoped people would forget over the six months between movies. You'd think they'd know better than to assume that sci-fi or animation fans would forget even the most trivial detail, particularly something shippy.

Meanwhile, the whole League of Robots subplot was kind of pointless. And Bender has gotten far too violent and amoral. Having him burn a swath through the city and kill hundreds in his duel with Calculon was excessive, and the business with his firstborn son was just not right. This is the sort of thing that would be okay in an Anthology of Interest imaginary tale, but it's just pushing things a little too far here. I suppose they're taking advantage of the lack of network censorship, but there is value in self-restraint. Not that I've ever been particularly fond of Bender, but it's hard to sympathize with him as a character when he's shown as so blatantly evil and homicidal rather than just making noises about it but really being more of a softie.

It did have its moments, though. The temporary friendship between Farnsworth and Werrrnstrom was fun, as was Deathball. The Kif-Amy subplot was sweet and touching, although I was kind of nauseated that Amy slept with Zapp. Ewwww. Even she should have higher standards than that. (Loved her funeral dress, though.) And the high point of the movie was Kif socking Zapp in the stomach. Long, long overdue and richly deserved.

As for the "Lost Episode" from the video game cut scenes, it was interesting, but not entirely effective. Too much of the story was in the game sequences, so the whole thing was rather disjointed. And the 3D animation was ugly. These character designs just don't work well in 3D; Fry in particular looked awful.

The movies are made in Korea, it saves on budget.

The series was animated in Korea as well. There hasn't been an American animated TV series actually animated in America since Filmation Studios went out of business in the late '80s (except maybe for some cheap Flash-animated shows). Rough Draft, the animation studio for Futurama and The Simpsons, has both an American branch and a Korean branch, with the Americans doing the storyboards and layout work and the animators in Asia doing the finished animation according to the Americans' instructions. Just about all animated shows these days are done that way. The Futurama movies are from the same animation companies, directors, and so forth as the series. The only difference is that the budget is lower.

Of course, Hawking's disability makes it extremely hard to "read him" for things like humor and such, so I really appreciate that he seems willing to have a bit of fun with it. :techman:

On the commentaries, they joked that Hawking has a Steven Wright-style delivery.
