2008 WWE Draft - Big Surprises

Hmmmmmmmm, I've watched this now. JR wasn't the only one upset. Michael Cole was almost in tears, he kept going on about how he's been on Smackdown for ten years and called all but two shows.

Jim Ross has said on his blog that he called his wife after being drafted and considered quitting on the spot. He clearly didn't know it was coming. Apparently he believes that the move to MyNetwork TV is important for Smackdown and they want him on the show to boost it. He has also said this on the post-production that goes on in Connecticut after Smackdown is taped:

"As far as going to Connecticut each week to do Smackdown post production, that's not going to happen. Either Mick Foley can handle it or the WWE can install a DSL line in my home to facilitate the work."

Right, there is going to be a supplemental draft today at "noon" (I guess this means some sort of US time, probably whatever time zone Connecticut is in).

So, Charlie Haas to ECW, you heard it here first!

Edit - someone's done the math on HHH's move to Smackdown. Looking at the schedules for both brands, it seems he will be able to spend two, three or even four more days per week with his wife if he works Tuesdays instead of Mondays. Since Stephanie pretty much runs Smackdown, it makes sense.

They broke up the JR and Jerry tandem? I don't watch wrestling anymore, but wow that was a shock.

^It was more of a shock to JR, trust me. It seems they want to move some star power over to Smackdown for when it moves to MyNetworkTV.

So they are sacrificing their flagship show just to make a non-discript barely existent network happy? I wonder who thought that one up.

How is breaking up a stale commentator team (J.R. & King) and granting a husband (Triple H) some more time with his pregnant wife (Stephanie McMahon) sacrificing the flagship?

Anyway, when Cole was brought in a decade or so ago it was specifically to replace J.R. on Raw at one point. I guess they thought they could do two things at the same time with the Ross/Cole switch:

a) Give Cole a shot at the job he was originally hired for

b) Boost Smackdown on a new network with their supposedly best commentator (although I don't agree with that distinction)

JR, I have to say, is superb in my opinion. If they allowed Joey Styles to be Joey Styles then that would be one thing, but they never did. I don't think Cole wanted to move any more than JR did.

I'm old fashioned, though. If I could snap my fingers and bring back Monsoon and Heenan I would.

I don't know. In my opinion J.R. hasn't really evolved much in the last decade or so and in a business like Wrestling, that's something that doesn't bode well for you in my opinion. Maybe working with Foley will reenergize his commentary, since he and King were feeling to comfortable in their positions to change their act much in the last few years or try anything new IMO.

I know he isn't someone who could lead a commentator team yet, but someone I really like on the mic is Josh Matthews, so I kind of hoped after the demise of Heat he might would be promoted to a more prominent role in one of the shows. But sadly it doesn't look like this is going to happen.

^We see a lot of Matthews in the UK on various shows like Afterburn. He's as annoying as hell. If he describes one more thing as "off the chain", I may strangle him.

Yeah, I know he does some of the recap shows, but that isn't really the right spot for him.

I don't see how "off the chain" is any more annoying than "slobberknocker" or all the other of J.R.'s "catchphrases". To be honest I'm way more annoyed with his stuff than with "off the chain", which admittedly Matthews uses very often, but I guess after using his phrases on any show repeatedly for decades J.R.'s isn't annoying, it's great commentary. :borg:

^The difference is that JR knows he doesn't sound cool, whereas Matthews just sounds like someone trying to be cool.

Yet he's still better than Adamle. I mean, come on, Samoan Bulldog ? :wtf:

What a surprise.

Mark Henry gets added to the Big Show vs Kane match to make it a triple threat and now he's been drafted to ECW.

Jamie Noble was drafted to Raw. I guess he wanted to job for some other guys. ;)

(The most likely reason he was drafted to RAW was because he's working as an Agent for ECW and ECW will soon be traveling with RAW rather than SmackDown.)

^Probably.

Trevor Murdoch to Smackdown. My money is on Chavo Guerrero to Smackdown (they'll pull some stunt whereby Bam Neely comes along as part of a package).

God, what a waste of a pick - Big Daddy V to Smackdown.

Deuce (of Deuce and Domino) to Raw.

^He was technically an ECW wrestler. He appeared on Smackdown a lot under the talent exchange agreement between Smackdown and ECW.

He's been gone since before Wrestlemania as WWE wants him to lose weight due to some health problems he's having.

DH Smith to Smackdown. Funny how main eventers all moved on Raw and now it's only midcarders moving.

Oh this is too funny, they've fracked themselves now - Hornswoggle to ECW!

Good.

Maybe the stupid little green bastard will get seriously injured and die.

CANNOT STAND HIM.

Bring back actual midget wrestling like the WWF had in the 80's or get rid of the little turd.

^All it does for me is mix up the situation with the WWE Tag Team titles. I figured he and Finlay would win to get them off Miz and Morrison so that when ECW and Smackdown split then it wouldn't be a problem.

Actually, on thinking about it, this is not so smart. Hornswoggle is popular with kids. Surely it'd be better to keep him on the show kids are most likely to watch - i.e. Smackdown, rather than the show that's on at 10pm on a cable channel.

Super Crazy to ECW, by the way. Whooo!

And Chuck Palumbo to Raw. Double whooo! Jamie Noble can do a few more jobs for him! Yay!
