The worst thing in Trek.

My Worst Thing in Trek (meaning something pervasive, not individual characters or episodes) is the tendency towards episodes where the characters fly in, solve the wrongheaded aliens' problems, give them a lecture about the superiority of the Federation, and fly away.

Either that or technobabble. Or the abuse of time travel.

Isn't all that Star Trek in a nutshell? Try hard to think of an episode that's free of any of those three things...er...

I dunno...in a similar vein, I personally lost interest in the new Dr. Who because he's such a morally superiour twit so much. Yeah, guns are bad. Humans are screw ups. Whatever.

As far as modern-day Trek is concerned, yes the music is horrible. Yes, the opening themes for TNG, DS9 and Voyager were excellent, but the background music in all the modern-day shows is bland and bad. They occasionally pull a good tune, like the arrival of the Borg cube in Best of Both Worlds or Species 8472's theme in Scorpion, but these are the exceptions, not the rule. Which is sad because TOS, TOS movies, and even TNG movies had excellent music.

You're not watching enough of the old episodes.

I can't remember any of the incidental music aside from a couple notable songs from TOS. Maybe that's a testament to how bad it was.

There are any number of things that bother me about Star Trek, just fewer than most TV series. The biggest one? Hum... the seeming lack of pop-culture in the 24th century. It seems like there hasn't been any innovation in acting, music, books... Almost every reference is to something we've heard of. It's just something that nags at me.

Has to be the music?

You only start to see how important soundtrack is when you listen to some great ones like on BSG or some great movie music.

Trek movies had really good tunes and of course series had great opening theme, but the music in the episodes tended to be horrible, so bland that I would feel insulted sometimes. Still can't get the awful music from some VGR and ENT episodes outta my head.

Think that music was totally overlooked in modern trek.

Am I the only one who likes the opening song for ENT?

Once I got over the shock and WTF!?!?! I actually didn't mind it. I don't know if I'd go so far as to say I liked it though.

It's the power of Trek. No force on Earth or in space can defeat it (unless it's named Berman & Braga). ;)

I agree - one of my favourite things about TOS is the dramatic scores for each episode. The music was almost like another character on the show. The first three seasons of TNG were pretty good in this regard as well, but after that it's like the music kept getting toned down and scaled back to the point you could barely notice it. I can hardly recall any episodic music from DS9 or VOY, even when situations warranted something powerful.

I agree!!!!:)

You'll soon know why I am a cadet. I should probably be the launch pad janitor.
I read about TOS and TNG. What are they? It's like reading a sentence and not knowing a word, it can change the whole meaning.

TOS generally refers to "The Original Series" from 1966 to 1969 and TNG is "The Next Generation" which ran from 1987 to 1994. :)

Sometimes you'll see TOS used as referring to another program (such as "Battlestar Galactica") which also has a remake/sequel series to it. :)

No. I liked it, too. :bolian:

Background music for TV shows is not supposed to be memorable. It is supposed to enhance the mood of the scene and be secondary to the images. I'd rather have music that I don't notice than music that distracts from the scene or overpowers the dialog.
I couldn't disagree more. Music has an incredible power to enhance the drama of the imagery of a television series.

Worst thing in Trek has to be the technobable. It bores me to tears. Quit the bullshit explaination's and just say what it really is "Ohhhh it's magic!"
