Your Top Five Trek Authors

I can narrow it down to three. In no particular order.

Peter David. Some of his stuff is great, some good, some bad, but I'll read any Trek stuff he does. He perhaps best captures the humor and playfullness of the original series.

Reeves-Stevens. Their books are brilliant, and they probably also made the Shatner books far more than they would have been otherwise.

John Ford. Yeah, he only did two books, but both are wonderful. Even if How Much for Just the Planet is not for everyone...

I might toss Dafydd Ab Hugh in for Fallen Heroes, and Andrew J Robinson in for his book. But I'd really like to see more of their writing before I become a gushing fanboy for them.

And honestly I'm not giving the Trek authors of the past three or four years a fair shake, since I have gradually reduced the number of Trek books I read in a given year.

It doesn't help being in Iraq of course, I think the newest Trek book I've spotted on the MWR's bookshelf(Morale Welfare and Recreation) is The Great Starship Race.

In no particular order:

1. Krad
2. D. R. George3
3. Mangles & Martin
4. Dayton Ward
5. David Mack

A special mention for Kevin Ryan, for his series of books. Waiting impatiently for his latest novel, due around Christmas.

Reading ; UNITY by S. D. Perry (Going through DS9 novels again!)

Thanks to everyone who so generously included me in their lists. I hope I can continue to be worthy of this honor.

Top Five eh?

Well hand's down #1 is David Mack (for every book/short story I've read that he's written)
Then in no particular order:

KRAD
J&G Reeves-Stevens
Christie Golden
SD Perry

My top five (In no particular order):

KRAD
Christopher L. Bennett
David "The Butcher" Mack
PAD
David R. George III

Having read through these lists I think I can safely say one thing ... whatever Mr KRAD and Mr Mack are paying everyone its clearly working.

Yeah, but for a little more I'd be willing to forget the other names on my list.

I'm not sure why but I didn't imagine S D Perry to be so high up. Maybe I just haven't read enough of her work.

Eeek, I left off the late Janet Kagan!

It's hard to put a one-entry author into a "Top 5" because the more prolific authors are always gonna jostle for higher positions, but "Uhura's Song" was a classic!

(BTW, That's my brief obituary message about Janet in the latest Titan "Star Trek" magazine. It was great to have the opportunity to be the one to farewell her that way. After my research, I went off to Amazon's second hand market and bought Janet's non ST novels, "Mirabile" and the revamped "Hellspark" - which actually contains an Afterword to "Uhura's Song"!)

Peter David...I LOVE New Frontier

Reeves-Stevens...Federation, Nuff said?

LA Graf...I think the first book I read was Time's Enemy...3rd in a series that spans all four shows...

Michael Jan Friedman...Don't remember exactly the things he wrote...

A.C. Crispin...Same as MJF, but I remember her being quite good.

And just for the heck of it...Diane Duane...Except for her TNG MU book...

I'm still pretty new to Trek Lite having only starting reading 2 months ago and have only read 10 books. So far I've loved all the books I've read from these authors:

Andrew J. Robinson
S.D. Perry
Jeffrey Lang
David Weddle
Krad
James Swallow

So far, I would give the nod to Perry because I'm liking her writing style. The words seem to just flow off the pages and she leaves the thesaurus on the book shelve unlike the "thesaurus brothers".

I'm hoping to read some Christopher Bennett books but I want to finish up the DS9-R first.
