Project Hail Mary | Ryan Gosling (March 20, 2026)

I loved how we got to see Rocky saving Grace after the fuel leak disaster, a scene that wasn't present in the novel because of Grace's first person conscious perspective. Likewise, the film made the wise choice of showing Eva receiving Grace's video logs and Taumoeba samples.

As someone who has not read the book, I actually believed that it might be the end for Rocky.

Yeah, they did a great job of amping up the tension on his survival. The film didn't provide quick relief in that regard and I think that was an excellent choice.

"Two of Us" was the perfect song choice for The Beatles probe reveal. The thematic relationship of that song hits hard with Grace and Rocky's friendship and journey and how far they would go each other. I wept with joy at hearing that song in that moment. The Martian had David Bowie and this film has The Beatles. Can't get much better than that.
That killed me. It's SO perfect. And since that's really the reveal of the names of the Beetles in the movie it's rather unexpected.

I found this amazing graphic of Eridian anatomy. I don't think it is a spoiler but just in case it is, I am putting it in a spoiler tag:

Astrophysicist Dr Becky Smethurst, known on YouTube simply as "Dr Becky", breaks down the real and fictional science of the movie interspersed with clips of her interviews with Ryan Gosling, Andy Weir and Miller and Lord. We even get a small look at a very small portion of Andy Weir's extensive notes kept for scientific accuracy for the novel.

Also, saw the movie yesterday. Never read the book and loved it. :techman:

Saw it tonight, and Amaze Amaze Amaze! They really did a great job realizing the novel and bringing it to life. And of course, bringing Rocky to life. And I know they've said they streamlined things for the movie, but I truly felt like they didn't leave anything out. Nothing felt like it was missing, and those that were were such a small part of the overall experience.

In an interview with Andy Weir, he stated that they'd waited for Drew Goddard to finish up what he was busy with because they so wanted him on board as scriptwriter. He was scriptwriter for The Martian as well, and Andy knew what he wanted as a team and they were willing to wait. So, I want to take a moment to acknowledge the great work he did in translating the story to the screen. Bravo! Can we get some jazz hands here??

I ended up going with my Mom and Dad, and my Mom usually isn't into Sci-fi movies, and she loved it.

That might be spoilerworthy, so I've spoilered it on my end, but here's the reply:
I'd forgotten that wasn't in the book. In some ways, the tension is even tighter in the book because of it. There's a period after the accident happens when you don't know either Grace or Rocky's status, the moment where Grace is wondering what happened to Rocky and if he's gone, the other part of the mystery being how he got to the medbay. I do agree it was a fun moment to add to the movie, in that it shows a strengthened bond between the both of them.

Their movies have never really copied the plot of the blockbusters, they just have to look similar and have a similar name, like Top Gunner, Battle Star Wars, Atlantic Rim or Planet Dune (starring Sean Young!!!).

Sounds like I dodged a bullet in not seeing any of those! :D

TrekBBS fav, The Critical Drinker, had Andy Weir on.to discuss the film.

Both Star Trek and Star Wars come up in the discussion. Pretty interesting.

He claims he pitched a Star Trek show.

With the success of this movie, I wonder now if there's an option for Weir's second book, Artemis. I didn't find Artemis to be as good as The Martian or Project Hail Mary though, but with it being set on the Moon, it could be interesting enough. The main problem with it is that I never felt the main character, who tries to commit a heist, was nearly resonant enough to lead the story, but that could be something maybe a movie could fix.

Lord and Miller are already planning to adapt Artemis after they're done with  Beyond. I'm in the minority as someone who greatly enjoyed the novel, so I'm looking forward to its eventual adaptation.

As for a potential Project Hail Mary sequel, it's noy something I'm clammoring for but if Weir comes up with an idea for it, I'm down for it.

But for now, I just want him to finish his fourth novel!

Yeah, I went looking on IMDB at the trivia for the movie and realized Artemis was already being planned. So yay, more Andy Weir! I do think that this is one story where the visuals will only help. But yes, I do agree aout Project Hail Mary's potential for a sequel. While I am happy it's doing extremely well, I'd hate to see Weir doing a sequel he doesn't feel like doing.

Weir admits as much. He talks about how he learned from the errors he made in creating the character for Artemis and how he used what he learned in creating Ryland Grace. Here is a link to the NY Times page, but the podcast can be downloaded from any podcast app/site:

He also talks in that podcast about how he could go about making a "sequel". It doesn't sound like a direct follow up to the story, but rather another story set in the same universe. Personally, I like that he hasn't made sequels so far--nothing wrong with an author who writes stand alone novels.

Definitely agree on that! I mean, look at how fresh and original Project Hail Mary turned out. If there is a sequel, it does sound like new characters within the same universe would be more likely. I really enjoyed his fresh and original ideas in this story.

Hey if anyone's interested, Dr. Becky posted her full interviews about PHM on her Youtube account:

Andy Weir seems like such a nice guy in every interview I've seen of him. I think Ryan Gosling is thinking WTF is this during his interview, but is gracious about it.
