Gen V (The Boys spino-off/universe) coming Sept 29, 2023

Congrats to @Dark Gilligan! It seemed almost obvious after you wrote it, but now, realizing this was all to get Marie to where she could heal Godolkin, my mind was blown. Kudos to the writers. I loved the "oh shit" moment where Cate sees what's really going on.

It feels like they're setting up Cate to sacrifice herself in some way to save the day next week, which would be a shame as Maddie Phillips has been excellent this season. Similarly, it's sad that Hamish Linklater won't be playing Cipher anymore as he's totally killed it all season. I suppose "Doug" could somehow stick around...

i wonder if next week finale is gonna be a longer episode and hopefully explains how doug became godkin and at the same time explain how godkin surivived that explosion in that flashback

I've watched the series over the last couple of weeks and I am enjoying it. That said, the twist with Godolkin was advertised in bright lights when Cate made the mistake about Cipher's powers. Then it was reinforced with further hints in every episode. Maybe it wasn't as obvious if you were watching week to week. But, like Peacemaker, the obvious twist became layered in the final week with the reveal about Marie's true purpose. I've found this season to be much better than the first, and I actually feel like these Gen V seasons are like 0.5 chapters in The Boys.

It could've been more interesting if Cipher were a true believer of Godolkin and doing this on his own free will, but let's say he was in an accident that left him a vegetable, so Godolkin took control of him. And then somewhere along the way he regained consciousness but was trapped, and living as a human puppet made him change his mind about what he was doing.

Well, I was wrong. Cate didn't die, so that's good. It was nice she got her powers back but she didn't end up having much tod with defeating Godolkin. But man, Goldolkin was so much more interesting when he was called Cipher and played by Linklater. And much smarter too. It was a decent ending but it felt lacking without the strong villain performance we've had all season. Even the part where Jaz Sinclair briefly played Goldolkin she was notable better than the new actor.

I was surprised they didn't even kill off any of the recurring characters, not even Justine who barely appeared this season but still dropped in every now and again to remind us that she was the worst.

So yeah, slightly underwhelming finale but I liked it more than the Peacemaker and Alien: Earth finales, at least. Felt like a bit of a short season. And what happened to the woman with the bee stinger? You can't set up a character who'll die if she ever uses her stinger than NOT have her use it (or appear after episode 3)!

It was an enjoyable and satisfying enough finale, but I dunno. In the end, Godolkin's defeat just felt kind of anticlimactic.

And I'm going to call it now, despite what the last scene implies, the Godolkin Gang are likely just going to have a minor cameo or two in The Boys Season 5.

You know, Goldolkin had a point (aside from the whole decimation thing).

What's the point of accepting ALL "supers" into a university for supers, even those with powers that functionally make you indistinguishable from a "normal" human being (like the guy with opposable big toes or whatever).

goldkin also had a point about vought industury and he also made a really good point about homelander being like a crazy egomaniac

Maybe i am doing the show a disservice and maybe i am unfair but i read a season finale review and some things were mentioned that i had to check out myself because i couldn't believe it ( i sat out the entire season after watching the first episode, just can't get into it anymore).

Yet, there was a "superhero" who can control her pubes to entangle someone and another one who can create transport portals via his ass - WTF?

I mean The Boys never shied away from gore, it went where Marvel and DC never could and wouldn't and that was initially a great lure to this universe and a great part of the fun. Over the course of the show i feel this has gotten out of hand to a point where i believe they have a bet going on in the writers room who can come up with the most disgusting superpower or the application of it.

I know it satirizes the whole genre to a point and is probably "realistic" in a way because some people are downright sick and perverted but when is it enough? For me it was when i saw Pube Lady and Ass Portal do their thing.

I don't know if there are plans post Boys season 5 but for now i'll be done after The Boys finishes, it's become a parody of itself i fear.

I agree about the appearance of the gang in Season 5. I also have an issue with the apparent plan that there will be a Gen V Season 3 after The Boys ends. I was hoping that the end of The Boys would be at least the end of the Homelander/Vought storyline, so my hope is that Gev V S3 will deal only with the aftermath of that and that we get a satisfying ending to the franchise. I fear that that might not be the case.

I also think that it is very possible that Godolkin has transferred his conscious into one of the meta-Scooby Gang.

The show was never meant to be a "realistic" version of a super-hero world and it was always over the top from the very first episodes. Exploding the invisible super by shoving a bomb (or something--I can't remember the details) up his butt and the guy with the super strong stretching penis was another.

The show was always a criticism/satire of various elements of society including fascism, blind idolization of powerful figures, and how the people in charge of the world don't care about the little guys beneath them. Homelander has always been written, at least in part, as a parody of Trump and his attitudes toward the world and people, for example. At first it might have seemed like an over-the-top criticism of the extremes of government and corporate control but now, only a few years later, its satire has become even more spot on.
