Brainstorming starship names

I usually try to use names that reflect the diversity of the Federation.

Vulcan names: T'Pau, T'Pol, Soval, Spock, Seleya, Sehlat, ShiKahr etc. (most of these have already been mentioned)

Andorian names: Shran, Therin etc. (can't come up with more right now)

When I'm in need for a Starship name I usually do some research (VIPs, geography, animals etc. of some Federation species)

Still, most of my starship names are from a human context (mythology, geography, people, animals), some of my favorites being: Alexandria, Demeter, Greyhound, Konrad Adenauer, Archimedes, Michael Faraday, Marie Curie, Minerva etc.

Yeah, and thematic names are nice as well, because they sound less earth-centred, like Razor, Fearless, Harmony etc., depending on the ship's primary duties (exploration, front line service)

When we were developing names for starships, we sometimes went with themes (mountains for the Steamrunner class, European capitals for the Norway class, anime characters for the Akira, etc.) and sometimes we didn't.

When I ran a fan ship (Galaxy Class) we had a Japanese theme - the Captain's Yacht was the Chrysanthemum and the runabout was the Ara (a river that run through Tokyo).
 
I had a bustier weekend than expected, but I managed to get some of these done:

I try to stay the frak away from Bravo Fleet-style battle-centric, cliche names.

It really depends on when you're talking about. TOS seems like Star Fleet is Earth's fleet, and Earth is a part of the Federation - in the same sense that the US Navy is the US's fleet, and the US is part of the UN. (Journey to Babel is nearly explicit in this)

If you take that, you won't have many 'alien' names in the fleet, if any at all.

Now, by TNG, Star Fleet is obviously the main fleet for the ENTIRE Federation, and the Federation is the UN with absolute authority (there's no longer an Earth government, etc). Oddly, in this time period, Vulcan, Betazed, etc, still have their own governments and fleets, but the Earth does not.

Do we actually know that? I just can't recall myself, but I'd think there would have to be some sort of local planetary agencies if nothing else. Maybe just not as prominent since so much of the Federation's government is based there...here...here then.

It does seem rather pointed that TNG doesn't have Earth as independant from the Federation government. Granted, I don't think it's explicitly mentioned, but it is explicitly mentioned that other planets aren't - highlighting a DIFFERENCE in how they're treated.
 
I'd try names like the U.S.S. Ecclesiastes for a TNG-era upgrade or Frankenstein Fleet creation. In example: a science/medical vessel such as the (Arthur C.) Clarke-Class by Atolm at SciFi-Meshes.

Well pretty much any monarch should be eligible to have a Sovereign named after them. It's my own personal belief that the ship's class should, whenever possible, be a factor in deciding its name.

Obviously this wouldn't work for classes like the Constitution or Excelsior.
