Any time I read about mass transit woes in America, I shudder at the mere thought of building our entire living environment around personal cars. People in Europe like to grumble about our public transport systems being underfunded, crowded, aging or not quite on time, or that networks operated by different providers aren't connected well to each other, but most of us still have access to an extensive network that carries us wherever we need to go in a reasonable amount of time at a fraction of a price needed to maintain a car. Maybe having to wait ten minutes for the next tram sometimes because the connecting subway train was late isn't so bad after all.
