What are your controversial Star Trek opinions?

It feels properly cinematic in a way that the TOS/TNG movies never have.

I like the whole Kelvin cast anyway.

It has the best OST and it has a true auteur in the director’s seat.

I just think it’s a very, very good movie.

Yes, I'll give them that, as far as imagery and scenery went it really had a 'grand movie' feel to it, not just some expanded episode with a higher budget.

Even so, I still don't think the narrative or characterisation was particularly strong. But I guess we all look for different things in movies.

The problem was that Generations, more than any other TREK film, was made for fan service. If you didn't know the lore you were out of luck in understanding what was going on with specific characters, mostly Data and Picard.
Yep. I remember seeing it with some of my non-trekkie friends and having to explain several parts to them after the movie. Which usually doesn't happen for ST IV.

NEMESIS short-changed Ron Perlman fans by not billing all the cast in the opening credits. His makeup was obscuring his normally recognizable facial attributes and I was supremely ticked off when the movie was over and THEN we got his name. It was like seeing the credit ''Kevin Spacey as John Doe'' all over again.*

(*His bald head threw me off at the time.)

Nemesis is better than First Contact.

Nemesis is the best TNG movie by some margin.
Spicy!

TBF "normally recognizable" isn't really Perlman's thing.

I can ... kinda... see this.

I do think that if it was a generic sci-fi action movie it probably wouldn't be seen as so bad. I think the fact that it has the Star Trek framework on top of it, and the expectations for what a Star Trek movie should be and the elements for something within this universe with these specific characters contributes to how badly it's seen.

I mean... if these elements were part of a Riddick movie, would people still think of it as awful as they do?

Controversial opinion:

While I have enjoyed something from each iteration of Trek (save Prodigy—haven’t seen past first episode, but maybe I’ll revisit eventually), if the following somehow became impossible to access for me (I don’t want to deprive anyone from what they like), I would not be overly distressed: TNG, DS9, VOY, ENT, LDS, DSC, PIC, PRO, TNG movies. I would very much mind if TOS, SNW, TOS and Kelvinverse movies disappeared. TAS would bother me slightly if it disappeared (like finding out your favourite hangout as a kid has been paved over), but purely for nostalgia of my childhood.

I guess the 23rd century on the Enterprise is where it’s at for me.

I agree. Though if everything beyond TOS became inaccessible, I'm not sure how big of a loss it would be for me. Beyond saving $12 a month on Paramount+.

Controversial Opinion:

I'd trade everything post-TOS for 13 episodes of the proposed Star Trek II.

See? Crazy talk is pretty much common round these here parts. ;)

I think Star Trek II (TV) would have been the end of Star Trek. It would not have had the cultural momentum that early TNG had to get it past the rough spots. And it would have been almost all rough spots. It would be on a shelf right next to Quark.

From my perspective, I would’ve been okay with the franchise ending before it ever got rolling.

My list would be TOS, DS9 and SNW, plus movies 2-4, 6, 8 and 13.

But really, I don't want to live without any of those but if I had to do it I'd be fine in the end. It wouldn't be even close to living without, say, Buffy the Vampire Slayer or Everything, Everywhere, All at Once or Godzilla Minus One or WandaVision. And even those are still just movies/shows. There are more important things in the world.
