Interesting minor Enterprise crewmembers

Laura Cynthia Chambers

Vice Admiral
Admiral
Which minor (not one of the seven main characters, Rand, or Chapel) should have appeared in more episodes?

* Kevin Riley, for sure. He shares common history with Kirk (Tarsus IV), has a fun attitude, and unfortunately, a knack for getting into trouble.

* DeSalle. We got to see him take command of Enterprise when other leading crewmembers were unavailable.

* Stiles, despite his prejudices. He comes from a long line of military (Starfleet) service, so a character with a proud family legacy to uphold and live in the shadow of.

I wanted more of Sally Kellerman (Dr. Dehner). I would have liked her as the permanent doctor instead of McCoy.

Another good Chief Medical Officer would have been Marianna Hill (Helen Noel). I don't dislike McCoy, but the Big Three would have been better rounded with one of them instead. And in 1966, woman doctors were still somewhat exotic and futuristic.

I do love me some Dr. Dehner and Helen Noel and would have liked either or both to be among the regulars, although I don't need to get rid of McCoy to do it.

Well unlike later series, TOS was dramatically and financially structured to focus on a small core cast. They couldn't afford an ongoing deep bench.

Especially in the third year. Though the first season has a refreshing batch of extra faces for the beamdowns and shuttle missions. The McCoy/DeSalle/Jaeger trio was very original thinking at the time. My best friend thought naming those three for a '90s TREK game trivia question would stump me. (Three hehs.)

Well, DeSalle made it briefly to the following year.....while Jaegar at least represented the crustier older generation like Boyce, Piper and the Jon Lormer-types. You could easily win a third season drinking game which three stooges would beam down almost every week for their planetary beach parties.....sometimes with a dash of Chekov.:borg:

I hadn't recalled Jaeger was older. Interesting dynamic of a young Kirk having older crew members under his command. I can't think of any chronologically older generation females serving under Kirk on the Enterprise offhand.

Lt. Carl Yeager was played by Robert Carlyle (born 20 March 1914) which makes him 52 years old during filming.

Not to cruel, but women aged out of roles at ~35 in Hollywood. Majel Barrett (Nurse Christine Chapel) may have the oldest female crew person (being 1 year younger than Shanter) or 34 years old at the start of the show.

That's a shame.

Regarding Lee Kelso's death, a humored Paul Carr remarked, "I was – I guess, officially – the first person killed on Star Trek [....] If it hadn't been for [Mitchell actor] Gary Lockwood, I'd probably still be on that series." In fact, just before the filming of the death scene, Carr spoke to Lockwood about how he wished to remain on the series. While then being lifted in the air and violently shaken by Gene Roddenberry, the actor was told some plans for his character that, ultimately, were never realized. "[He said] 'Don't worry about it, kid. We're gonna freeze you and bring you back!' And they never did." (Starfleet Access for "Where No Man Has Gone Before", TOS Season 1 Blu-ray special features)

And Paul Carr went on to be killed and killed and killed, as a guest star in series after series. It was like his trademark.
