That's Welshy, James Doohan's replacement on Futurama.
Yeah, TMP really is its own thing. It has a “we consulted with NASA and 70s futurists” vibe that really stands out. None of the other productions look like anyone bothered with consulting futurists ever again (shoot, TWOK was completely the opposite and went 1800s “Age of Sail in Spaaaace”, down to manually loading cannonballs). As someone who became a fan of Trek back in the 90s, what always intrigued me about TMP is how odd it seems. It sticks out as feeling like nothing else that has the Star Trek moniker attached to it. It doesn't feel like TOS or any of the other movies featuring the TOS or TNG casts.
the initial plans for the 1701-D was to have the command crew actually sitting at a conference table on the bridge
I’ve seen the concept art for that. In some of them, it basically makes the edge of the horseshoe into a wraparound couch that sits on one side of the table. The center table in OPS for Deep Space Nine probably comes the closest to that idea.I sort of wonder if that proximity is why for the later shows they have the captain and first officer sitting together. (I’m also reminded that the initial plans for the 1701-D was to have the command crew actually sitting at a conference table on the bridge.)
Robert Wise agreed with you.I understand what Star Trek: Into the Space Vagina was trying to do. But it has a fundamental structural problem, which is that entirely too much of the film is about characters giving wordless reactions to a viewscreen.
