Which of the five shows had the best third season?

NOTE: I allowed multiple choices, but please refrain yourselfs from mocking the thread, as I do this because I wonder if anyone is torn between the choices. For instance, one may say TNG and DS9 had the best third first seasons, but all other shows's third seasons sucked - know what I mean?

Well?

Changing the rules? I'm only following up what I established with the first two seasons, on to this one. I don't understand...

That said, I believe this poll won't end up as favorably towards TOS as the last one... Considering Season 3's reputation on Trek and all.

Enterprise. The Xindi-arc produced some very fine drama for this show (most notably for Archer and Trip, I don't care much for the T'Pol trellium addiction angst). "Azati Prime", "Similitude", "Damage", "Twilight", "The Forgotten", "The Council", "Countdown", "Anomaly", these were all big winners in my book. Not to mention "Impulse", "The Shipment", "Proving Ground", "Stratagem" and "Zero Hour", which are a pleasure to watch.

I'm also fond of TNG and DS9's third seasons.

TNG had the best third season. TOS, DS9 and VOY had some good third season eps but TNG was the most consistent. I liked the third season of ENT but given the choice I'd rather watch TNG's third season again.

ENT, IMHO. The Xindi arc really took the whole show to another level. It added much needed tension, put Archer in one tough situation after another (and let him handle some better than others). It also let Trip and T'Pol show many new aspects, and begin a relationship that was great to watch. Lesser lights like Hoshi and Reed got good airtime with worthwhile shows to highlight them.

The whole 2nd half of the season is larglely without a misstep, and great to watch! S3's "The Shipment" is my favorite ENT episode as well, really showing how nuanced Archer could be.

1.TNG. It wasn't as consistently good as season four but I thought it had several 3.5 star or four star episodes like The Survivors, The Bonding, The Enemy, The Defector, Yesterday's Enterprise, The Offspring and of course the classic The Best of Both Worlds. Then there were nice episodes like Evolution, Ensigns of Command, Tin Man etc. In fact there really isn't an episode that I found unwatchable at all this season.

And while TNG kept to the more low key stuff as opposed to ENT's epic Xindi saga it still worked and gets my vote for best third season.

2.ENT. I was surprised that I ranked this season at number two but it was a vast improvement over season two and surprisingly B&B crafted a rather interesting storyline. In fact, it experimented with the Lost/Heroes approach before they even premiered by throwing a bunch of unanswered questions and puzzle pieces that left the audience wondering who the Xindi were, were they really responsible for the attack, was FG lying, what were the purpose of the spheres and as the season progressed the threads and puzzles starting clicking nicely into place.

The writers respected continuity and developed an interesting mythology surounding the Expanse, the Sphere Builders and the Xindi. Most episodes built on previous episodes logically whether with the efforts to procure trellium or the efforts to begin charting/predicting location of anomalies. The plot complications felt natural such as the setback with not being able to line the ship with trellium due to its effects on Vulcans.

The writers also used the opportunity to draw on a rather epic canvas giving us tons of characters, character perspectives and dynamics from all sides(Degra, Archer, Daniels, Shran, Dolum, the Sphere Builder); we got a wide range of sets and locales from the various Xindi ships/bridges to the ENT-J to the 26th century to the Fed ceremony in 2161 to the Xindi council to the interior of the Xindi weapon to the the Sphere Builders' realm to an altered 20th century Earth in the final moments of Zero Hour.

The VFX were outstanding with the massive battle sequences which were some of the best I have ever seen or the awe-inspiring shot of the interior of the Weapon or the Weapon underwater inside its cradle or of the flight through the clouds on the way to the council. The production design was outstanding whether the Xindi make-up, the costumes, the council set, Shran's bridge, Degra's bridge.

The writers developed three compelling arcs for Archer, T'Pol and Trip and even the minor characters found themselves in the mix of things.

If there was one shortcoming it was the inconsistency in quality. When it stuck to the episodes that hit on the arc material they were usually good or great(Anomaly, Rajiin, Impulse, The Shipment, Twilight, Proving Ground, Strategem) but when they went for a filler standalone it was usually a bust(Extinction, Chosen Realm, Doctor's Orders, E2). I think maybe if they had not been so intent on dragging the arc out all season it would have helped.

But it did show that Brannon still had his touch when it came to high concept sci-fi elements such as those driving the Xindi arc. And the stretch from Azati Prime to Zero Hour was on par with the DS9 Final Chapter Saga.

3.DS9. I wasn't too crazy about this season. It was the chance DS9 had to strut its stuff after TNG was off the air and before VOY premiered but it didn't come through. It was highly erratic. I didn't particularly care for episodes like Fascination, Meridian, The Search II, Family Business, Prophet Motive, The Abandoned, Distant Voices, Facets, The House of Quark. And I felt it did ignore the Dominion for far too long. There were some good episodes like The Search I, Defiant, Visionary, Destiny, Explorers and Improbable Cause/The Die is Cast.

4.VOY. Season three was a mess. It was the first time I ever considered stopping watching a Trek series. I don't know what they were thinking with stuff like Coda, The Q and the Grey, Sacred Ground, Blood Fever, Rise, Favorite Son, The Darkling, The Swarm. And then middling stuf like Macrocosm, Warlord, Real Life. If it wasn't for the rumors of a shake-up and Scorpion I probably would have stopped watching it.

5. TOS--the show had seen better days.

Trekwatcher and startrekwatcher, just out of curiosity, are the two of you somehow related?

Easy, TNG. Season 3 was its best year.
Runner up: Enterprise
Honorable Mention: Voyager

Its DS9 and TNG for me. While TOS has more than its share of excellent episodes, it lacks the consistency of entertainment present in DS9 and TNG.

TNG by now has become its own self - not lingering to the past or endlessly trying for itself. The show becomes more philosophical, more internally responsible, and the characters are fleshed out like never before. In TOS, they hit it right by season 1. Here, they had to strive through season 3 for true greatness. And it only gets better from here.

DS9 has always been, for me, a show that consistently got better. TOS was always good, but Season 3 and, arbitually, TAS, wasn't as good as its first seasons. TNG got better in time, and then, it slammed afterwards. DS9, with this third season, proves that its as good as before, if not better. The stories become more serial, like we know they eventually will, and the characters are faced with critical situation and such, that only make it worth to watch this far. There's not one bad episode in this third season, and that alone makes it best.

VOY's third season is when the show became slightly interesting. Its also my favorite season of VOY, with quite a few episodes that are highly entertaining - such as "Tuvix" and "Future's End". That said, its still VOY, so...

ENT's third season was a MASSIVE improvement over the previous season (IMO, the worst season of anything Trek). The Xindi arc and the Temporal Cold War was interesting. It still suffers, though - the T'Pol addiction story drags the hell out of the show, and makes the Vulcan history look like a joke.

Overall, here's how I'd rate them:

1. DS9
2. TNG (very small gap, almost a tie - DS9 just had more entertaining episodes)
(gap)
3. TOS (Its "Spock's Brain"'s fault)
(big gap)
4. ENT
5. VOY

TNG had the best third season. ENT and DS9 would follow closely behind that. VOY was still pretty weak during this season, but had a few great episodes. TOS falls behind all the others and it was a sad time for all.

Like TNG's first season, thus far, VOY's third season has garnered NO votes. Thats surprising to a degree - always thought it was one of its better seasons, but thats just me.

Also, consider TOS's unrivaled victory in the first two season polls, TOS's season 3 is quite below TNG and DS9 this time. Understandably, I guess, as the latter shows became better in time, whereas TOS didn't.

I must also note that ENT's season 3 has garnered, thus far, a large number of votes. Its neck-to-neck with TNG and DS9, in fact.

I never get tired of these polls.:klingon:

1.) TNG hands down. Best of Both Worlds,Yesterday's Enterprise,Sarek,The Offspring.... Some of the best Trek episodes period came from this season of TNG.

2.) DS9. I thought this was somewhat a letdown after season 3. But still good.

3.) Enterprise. Better than that crappy second season was, but still not there yet.

4.) Voyager. Never been a big fan of this show, although seasons 4 and 5 were the best.

5.) TOS. Just pure crap and unwatchable.

Come on now, ktanner3 - TOS's third season worse than ENT or VOY's? Sure, "Spock's Brain" is quite bad - but is the whole season unwatchable because of it? No.

"Tholian Web"? "The Enterprise Incident"? "All Our Yesterdays"?

Platos stepchildren,Turnabout Intruder,The Savage Curtain,The Way to Eden,The lights of Zetar,Spectre of the Gun, etc.. It was much more than "Spocks Brain" that ruined this season. It's by far the worst season in all of Star Trek.
