News The ongoing next Star Trek movie thread

What are we supposed to be thinking? Every year they come along with someone new that is making the next movie, and that movie never comes to fruition. I can't believe it is that hard to come up with the "right" story.
"Right" story has nothing to do with it. Getting all the pieces to agree and work together is. As a friend of mine who works in Hollywood notes, "It's a miracle any film gets made."

I don't know. I guess I'm fed up with the cynicism that reigns supreme in fandom circles and would prefer the neutral stance of "Maybe" instead of the "Paramount has no intention of doing anything" with underlying subtext of business sucks, and Paramount hates Star Trek.

There was no subtext of business sucks or Paramount hates Star Trek in my post. There can be licensing and legal issues that would have them half-heartedly claiming they are making a movie every year without the drama you are talking about.

I'll believe there will be a next Star Trek movie when I'm sitting in the theater getting ready to watch it on opening night.

Paramount loves Star Trek. They love it soooooooo much they keep trying to expand it even though the expansions, be it huge budget movies or merch, keep failing to meet their expectations. It and Yellowstone are their main draws for Paramount+, and Trek is still worth enough that it's better for them to license out streaming rights to other services than keep them exclusive to P+.

What they love more than Star Trek is money and it's no coincidence that these announcements keep being made on investors calls with absolutely no prep or right at the same time they're up for sale and Tom Cruise leaves them for WBD.

Fans wouldn't be so cynical if Paramount didn't keep jerking them around for stock price.

Same.

But to sit and assume Paramount's intentions is smacks of expecting the worst.

So we assume the worst?

Got it. I won't. If it is made, great. I won't assume Paramount's intentions beyond what is shared anymore. It's fatiguing.

Yeah, I think I figured it out. Got it, sports fans. Being a fan means assuming the worst will happen so you won't be disappointed.

:sigh:

Or maybe it means recognizing the context around the announcements ? No one claimed SNW was a fake announcement.

At what point do we quit taking these proclamations seriously? Maybe Paramount should sit on news about making a new Star Trek movie until they are actually prepared to do so with actors signed, sets being constructed and a completed script.

Paramount is becoming the studio that cried Star Trek.

That is not the tone of the conversation.

At what point do we allow cynicism to rule?

I agree with you about I'll believe when I am sitting in the theater but I'm not trying to read Paramount's intentions either.

Why is JJ / Bad Robot producing again? I thought their deal with Paramount wasn't renewed in 2018?

Maybe they own a piece of the Star Trek IP now, which is why there is so much trouble getting a film off the ground. They want one thing, Paramount wants another and probably both have to have the film signed off on by CBS or whatever its corporate name is now.

I won't let it rule.

It doesn't "rule". The only time I think of new Star Trek theatrical releases now is when Paramount feels the need to tell me they've hired someone new to make the film. Which seems to be about every 18 months or so.

And, I'm struggling to care about yet another prequel.

Yeah.

Fans: PLEASE FOR THE LOVE OF GOD GIVE US LEGACY SET POST-PICARD!

Paramount: Did you say... PREQUEL! YOU GOT IT, FANS! PREQUEL IT IS!

In all reality, none of us know what Paramount is up to. It's like a combination of things. Yeah, announcing a new Star Trek movie would help their valuation for the potential sale... so... that's one.

People "more in the know" seem to think it's at least a possibility. I'm sure the footage is there, I was at New York Comic Con '22 for the Picard panel, and the conversation about a movie popped up, with Patrick Stewart looking over at Kurtzman and saying something along the lines of "There is a spot for a film available at Paramount" or some such, seemingly indicating that Paramount WAS at the very least reserving a potential for a movie.

ViaParaCBSmountCom is also like, an absolute shit show of a company from what it seems. I also don't doubt that some executive is like "More Star Trek movies!", the yes men scramble but nothing comes of it, and another executive demands "More Trek movies", and the process starts again. In a different industry, I work with c-suite executives often. I can tell you... they tend to mostly out of touch, and they never hear the word "no", even if what they are asking for is impossible. You say yes... and then if it's something that's just not going to happen, you go through some motions to make it seem like its happening while they are still paying attention to it and let it just drift away once they've moved onto something else.

Ok.

I'll let It go since this makes no sense to me now.

I'm way past getting excited about these announcements.

Paramount seems to be in an oddly similar place with the Trek movies now to where they were in the 1970s after having decided to turn a TV show into a feature film: they really don't have a clear idea of what they want it to be, have no particular faith that a particular approach will "work," and so are running through a succession of talented people that they're interested in and are hoping will bring something fresh and imaginative and confident to the project.

And a lot of these people have already come and gone, and more may well come and go before anything at all goes before the cameras. Everything may change direction again, and again.

I'm struggling to see what doesn't make sense? Fool me once? Shame on you. Fool me twice (or ten times)? Shame on me.
You said now is the right time for cynicism to rule.

Then it doesn't.

And I agree with you about waiting and seeing or sitting in the theater. But, that's not cynical to me.

Must be a me thing.
