What are your controversial Star Trek opinions?

According to my wife, the worst series of Star Trek is Deep Space Nine.

She's yet to watch Voyager onwards but she can't stand DS9 or the majority of the characters.

DS9 is arguably the series that took the longest to find its footing. I can see not engaging immediately and then just checking out.

Characters are always going to be the biggest selling point, at least in my experience. If you don't care about the characters or connect in some way then it's probably not going to work.

That's where Voyager falls down for me, because half the characters are bloody useless and I just don't like them. Well, that and the overuse of the great galactic reset button.

Hates the setting and just hasn't connected with any of the characters beyond Julian and Odo. She really liked Miles when he was on TNG but not so much on DS9. Still cares about Worf because, let's face it, it's Worf.

Odd considering O'Brian barely is a character on TNG. And DS9 is the first time ST actually has good main female characters

She's gotten to Worf and she STILL doesn't like DS9?

Yup, we're about five episodes into S5 and she still can't stand it. Much preferred TNG and Enterprise.

It's not as if he was her favourite on TNG, but Miles is pretty likeable during that run. DS9 turned him into a grumpy old man.

I could fire out her list of character flaws she can't get past and, to be honest, I kinda see some of them. But Sisko being an all out dick to Jean-Luc in the first episode did nothing to endear him to her.

Sisko was an "all-out dick" to Picard? He had every reason to hate Picard, since he knew Picard played a direct role in the death of his wife. His perception was more than justified.

I don’t much fancy getting into anything too deep on this front, but I’d have thought it was common knowledge that once you had been assimilated, you no longer had free will.

That would be Locutus, Picard had nothing to do with the Borg attack, he was kidnapped and his knowledge robbed from him.
Picard said this to Robert in 'Family': They took everything I was. They used me to kill and to destroy, and I couldn't stop them! I should have been able to stop them! I tried. *begins sobbing* I tried so hard. But I wasn't strong enough! I wasn't good enough! I should have been able to stop them. I should, I should."

Sisko's anger towards Picard is understandable but perhaps misplaced.

That's true, but Picard was chosen by the Borg. AND it was Sisko's wife who died. He's not going to be thinking straight about this.

Also, Sisko doesn't know Picard like the audience does. So it's easier for the anger to build up.

Exactly; Sisko was not sitting around reading up on Borg assimilation effects on Picard, but he did know Picard was the leader of the attack which killed his wife. He was not going to just write off the death in a way that mirrored the TV audience's view.
