PIC Season 3 compared to other Late Sequels

There's no group think required. Your personal take on it is, of course, valid. Heck I've seen one or two who dislike The Wrath of Khan out there, so stranger things have happened.

If this finale and this season makes the majority fans, audiences and reviewers happy, that is awesome. If a few had a miserable time with it, it doesn't take away from it's near unanimous positive reception.
That doesn't answer my question at all. I don't understand this appeal to the majority as not being "group think." That's what it is to me. At this point I just have to say good day.

I don't see the issue at all with the Nostalgia. They have given enough newer stuff as well. As for not healthy for the franchise...huh???? Some of these characters(seven for example) can definitely headline their own show. Worf, Riker etc. They are important to Star Trek....they are still young enough for some more material while introducing new characters. I'm having a really hard time understanding some peoples logic on this. I did not hear nearly the complaints when we got more Spock, Chapel, uhura, Pike, T'Pring , Kirk etc.....

At least we are not getting recasts with our TNG favorites. They are moving forward with new characters that I'm sure we will see again ...

Just my opinion of course:

There is nothing wrong with nostalgia, in moderation. But I don't think this season of Picard has anything to offer but nostalgia. I don't like the plot and I don't like the characterizations. The dialogue us abysmal. There's no real, deep emotion. Just nostalgia. It's pretty clearly a season built around our fond feelings for TNG. Fireproof said it perfectly: it feels regressive. It feels backwards.

I don't count any particular character as "important to Star Trek." TNG didn't enlist any TOS cast members for its main cast and it did just fine. New shows should be able to move forward without being encumbered with the full weight of the past. And I'm sure there are many folks complaining about SNW being a prequel to TOS and using the same characters.

For me, it all comes down to good storytelling. If they can tell a good story, I'll let just about anything slide. SNW was a fine season with fine stories. Picard has largely not been fine, so my critiques of minor things (like nostalgia baiting) are sharper in the absence of anything else to grab onto.

Precisely so. And I was onboard...until this last episode. Now, not so much.

It's fine that they went with nostalgia but please don't tell me that "This is Star Trek" when what is meant is "this is nostalgia and in the feels." At least be honest about why you like it, rather than claiming all the perfection of this season and it's writing the ship and stuff. No, it got us in the nostalgia feels. And when that wears off, then what?

I don't think anyone was saying it's perfect.

No. Just "righted the ship."

Just be honest. It's the nostalgia.

Of course people like the nostalgia. A bit too much nostalgic moments. Yeah. So what??? Who's saying that's not part of its appeal? I haven't enjoyed a season of Trek this much since Enterprise. I hope we see further adventures with Jack, the Laforge sisters, Seven, Raffi, Worf, Mura , Esmar etc ...

It's basically nostalgia overload. I'm ok with nostalgia when it supports the story and characters. Preferably in moderation. But I can even let excessive amounts pass when the plot/characters warrant it.

Like you, I was onboard most of this season. And I truly thought giving TNG crew closure, a nice sendoff was a good thing. Something that probably justified the large amounts of nostalgia.

But it's gone off the rails. It's nostalgia instead of plot/character development. Or maybe even worse, nostalgia at the expense of them.

Look the season's been a lot of fan service, with enemies regurgitated left and right. Normally I can't stand that stuff. I mean, if I just read the scripts, I'd think, wait a minute, who wrote this, Judith and Gar Reeves-Stevens? Who I loved btw, but I mean, this reads like a Trek novel where they squeeze 58 characters into it. It's not believable. Not in the least.

That being said, you know what, SCREW THAT!!!! GOD DAMN IT ALLLLLLL to HELLLLL! The nostalgia is a bit much, but again, I don't care, for once. This has been done so well, with so much reverence for the old days. Every step of the way. It's been a celebration of TNG, of Gene, Rick, Michael, Ronald D., Jeri, Westmore, Drexler, Okuda, Justman, I could go on and on.

I will always adore the way TOS crew went out with V and VI, they had pimples but I loved them. However, for the most part, it wasn't the same brain trust at work there. This has literally been TNG in its DNA. "Vox" was totally TNG, with the smartest crew in Trek history figuring it out with their minds. The actors have been unquestionably Trek's strongest family through and through, and so are their characters.

Star Trek The Next Generation SAVED the franchise, it gave it a rebirth that continues still to this day. TOS was done, it was headed for the mothballs, and if TNG failed, I'm not sure if Paramount would have kept Trek around. It was my favorite series, the one I first encountered at age 11 during the third season and was hooked. Bravo!

I'd like to add, THIS season, THIS story, again as corny it is with plot potholes and fan service, THIS is what Star Wars fans wanted out of those putrid sequels and were cruelly denied. It's what I still love about the TOS movies, that despite advanced age and body mass, the OG crew hit their marks and saved the dang day each time. Just old fashioned simple movie making. Enough with the flaws, and turning our heroes into alkies or something, no, they're older, they're wiser, and they're here to WIN I SAY. WIN.

Cruelly, eh? I enjoyed them.

And, as a long time SW fan, I can say no I didn't want this. It could have been better but not this level of "Remember that old thing? We do too!"

Right now neither approach is perfect and vascilates too hard one direction or another. But, I certainly enjoyed the ST more than this last episode.

I'm truly glad you enjoyed it so far. I enjoyed the first half of the season greatly, but it has declined since then. I say that as someone who was ready to appreciate a TNG closure like the TOS crew had.

We'll have to disagree about using their smarts in this one--at least not on screen. Much of it was done offscreen and then they told us what they discovered. You want to "show not tell"--and they did the opposite.

This episode had tons of exposition because they didn't show us what was going on.

I still hold out hope for the finale. I have a hard thinking they'll have a good resolution in a single episode. If they pull it off, I'll be the first one praising them. We'll see.

Yes I enjoyed them too, but they hold little value to me now. The characters they created were largely cartoonish and vapid. And when it's done, I can guarantee you won't hear Brent Spiner or Gates McFadden angrily denounce their own movie like Mark Hamill did.

Well that's how streaming series go nowadays, they have to be moving at 90mph. I do not know why, they just do.

I feel like streaming ST is behind other serialized streaming series. I don't even watch much TV but I can think of several other series that have done a far better job: The Expanse (for a SF example) and GoT.

Not that a ST series needs to be anything like them, but they've really mastered serialized story telling on TV whereas ST can take notes.

Nostalgia is good in small doses. I’ll even admit the scene at the end of “Vox” made me smile. But the rest of the episode? Meh. I don’t watch prestige TV for storylines I might read in a fanfic.

I know what PIC Season 3 is, so I judge it for what it is. As a celebration of the previous generation of Star Trek, it's great. As a representation of the current generation of Star Trek, that should be left to other series. "But the current generation sucks!" Oh, believe me, I've heard that before and I'll hear it again...
