The valuable $thing stolen from Daystrom is obviously Lore - but I wonder why the Changlings (I imagine these two storylines are intertwined) would want him.

People have commented on how season three is this huge departure for Star Trek: Picard, but I feel that when the dust settles, all three years will form a very cohesive run of stories about parenthood, children and loss.

The themes have clearly run throughout all three seasons so far. The middle act might not have been a complete success, but it's looking good for the series as a whole.

Yup. The only difference is that Picard is paired up with Riker and Crusher and that "makes it feel like Trek" in some nebulous fashion, so therefore it's better, or something.

Which is why seeing people who are less than taken with it is more interesting to me because I see the same blasted themes and trends and plots in Season 3 as 1 and 2 except now we have more familiar people. It's amazing to see the rather shallow points of analysis.

So you think the season ends ends up being about an evil AI? We sure haven't seen THAT in Star Trek before. Or at least recently. Or at least in Star Trek Picard. Or... Shit.

That stuff that crusher saw when out was him making first contact with the alien intelligence they are inside (that is also what the conversation with the science officer is about).

Next episode they will get drawn further and further in and all will seem doomed.

It will make further contact with him and after some heavy handed metaphors for fathership it will reverse its gravity well pushing them free. Jack will learn an important lesson.

As for Riker being a dupe - no think how obvious this show is - the flashback scene directly links to their argument and makes no sense if it’s not Riker.

You maybe right about Jacks vision but….

is a clip showing Titan free falling looking hopeless and a bright light appearing…..we’re supposed to think they’ve been found……but I feel like it’s Poppa Bear Geordi coming to save them, which explains why he seems pissed in trailers.

The question is why a bounty hunter or a group of renegade changelings would care about an android that's been deactivated for 30 years and a Victorian holocharacter. I don't think Lore or Moriarty are the actual end goal, but they need to be means to that end- it likely needs to be knowledge that one or both of them have, perhaps something related to the Enterprise-D, which would coincide with Crusher going over old logs in the first episode.

There is power in a sentient AI. Soong androids are few and far between - always have been. Voy's EMH could be considered sentient, but where's he at these days after they returned home? The Moriarty program is unique, with the mind of a super-genius, augmented by 24th century computing speed and power. If I were a black market bad guy and looking for an epic payday, that thing would be worth acquiring at all costs.

Moriarty was capable of taking control of the Enterprise from within the Holodeck, and Lore could not only establish communications with the Crystalline Entity and sic it on Omicron Theta but somehow also managed to set up himself as the despotic leader of a group of renegade Borg with no resources but his own ingenuity. Both of them have a bone to pick with Starfleet and especially with Picard and his crew, so if the Changelings set the two up as having a shared enemy, they might be able to cause untold amounts of destruction in their vengeful rampage. Moriarty doesn't even need to have a big contribution, all he needs to do is provide Lore with the backdoor into Starfleet's systems and Lore could pick it up from there himself.

Lore doesn't seem like a villain to me, that's way too obvious. Could be that he's being used by the Changelings but it seems like he'll ultimately be lined up with the rest of the TNG crew at the end.

I gave this one an 8. A very nice solid episode. I had thought about going with a 9 but there were several reasons I didn't.

The ongoing storyline is intriguing. I loved the cat and mouse game in the nebula. It was nice seeing them actually building that drama up. (In contrast, an SNW episode looked like it was going to be cat and mouse with the pirates but that fell down with goofy hijinks.) But this Picard episode paid off on that idea while have interesting shipboard drama.

I love that the Changelings are back! (Callin it now, but we know from previews that Moriarty is back. I'm guessing Moriarty is a Changeling who obtained the knowledge of Moriarty via the nebula creatures reading Picard's mind.)

So, why not higher than an 8. Well, 8 is a very good episode for me, where 9s and 10s are rare even for series I enjoy. (By definition, you simply cannot have most episodes being well above average!) But a few things held it back from being great:

Retread ideas, such as hiding in a nebula and nebula as a lifeform. Been there done that multiple times. It was well done in this episode, but not original.

I don't buy Crusher's reasons for not telling Picard about Jack. It's doesn't feel real given their characters. It took me out of the story just a little bit.

I didn't like the ending with the conflict between Picard and Riker. I'm sure it'll be resolved. Guessing Picard makes his restitution by sacrificing his life at the end of the series (yeah, we all know that the series must end that way). But this is a TNG reunion. I want to see them getting along. Maybe changed but not at each other's throats. I hope this rift is short lived, but I suspect it will carry on until near the end of the season.

On a filming note, Raffi's and Worf's chase after that guy on M'Tala near the end was underwhelming. Very clearly used very few extras in a very small space.

Overall, I enjoyed the episode but a few niggling things that kept it from being great. But good, solid entertainment!

Actually you can thank TMP. It’s the V’ger instrument.
TMP didn't lead to that one sound appearing in all kinds of trailers and scenes.
The blaster also played a melody with several notes, some sliding up and down, not just that one musical fart that Inception made popular :D
