It's not as good as tng was and the first 2 seasons were awful garbage but this season is at least making an attempt to be more trek like. Yeah it's derivative and some things are off like Beverly keeping a secret son from picard for 23 or more years but there are some good moments. It's better than nothing and at least we get to see the old tng gang one more time.
It's really not. If it's not enjoyable it's not enjoyable.
Absolutely loved this episode.
Jonathan Frakes directed and also put in one of his best ever performances as Riker, what a pro. I don't think he's a changeling or Tom Riker, he was completely in character. This was the tense, under-pressure Riker who could be an asshole, not the easy-going, jazz-loving womaniser. We saw that plenty on TNG but tends to get de-emphasised lately.
Gates McFadden probably also had her best ever scene as Beverly. I think that was brilliantly written and performed by her and Stewart, as it needed to nail it for us to buy it. I went with it - Picard would definitely have been a shitty dad.
But he was completely right that she should have given him the option to be there at all. In the end they both made bad choices. It was a great scene.
And Michael Dorn very much still has it. He stole every single scene he was in! The chemistry with Raffi is excellent too.
So it's Changelings, or rather, some Changelings. I'm glad to finally have a proper DS9 follow up, and now I'm speculating about some of those rumoured surprise cameos.
A trip to DS9? Colonel Kira? Dr Bashir? Garak?! Probably not, but it looks like the Defiant might be docked at Geordi's space museum.
I'm not quite sure if the Changelings are the ultimate big bad, yet. Doesn't feel like Picard ever had much to do with them, so I think it's just a part of the puzzle...

Glad to see they went back to a "viscous fluid" Changeling look, as opposed to that weird dusty swirling morph cloud thing they used in DSC when they reached the 32nd century. That just felt wrong to me.
I agree with everything you said. Riker was in character and right. Picard was out of line. And the changelings are working with Vadic, they aren't the big bad, just an alliance with her.
I don't think she could care less about Jack. She went after Jack so Beverly would summon Picard, who is who she wanted.
I think it could be the bad-guy's Lesser Link. It has electromagnetic discharges and a bio signature.
I'm trying to rewatch, but every time I pause to look at something in detail, P+ insists I see a Kinder Bueno ad overlay. They must really want people to watch via Amazon instead 
Picard has shown repeatedly that he is rusty - engineering knowledge, starbase knowledge. He's a good FRIEND, but right now, the ship needs a commander and Picard is not it, nor up to it, and Riker needed to deal with the person interfering. Business, not personal.
Does she even want him alive either? For all she knew that last portal trick redirecting the Titan's weapons back on the Titan would've killed Picard.
Yeah it's obviously alive somehow. Reminded me a bit of the telepathic pitcher plant thing from Voyager.

I give this show a 10 holy Cow I am so excited about Ds9 Dominion war fallout is front and center with the Changelings returning .I Like the scenes with Riker and Picard talking about Thad and the flashback scene is well done and the scene with Picard confronting Beverley about their son Jack is well acted. I wonder if Vadic is a shape Shifter and the alien soldiers are Jem Haddar and want to use eugenics as revenge for what section 31 did causing the changeling virus during the war.I like Shaw giving command of the Titan to Riker. This was an amazing show full of suprises.It reminds me of The hunt for the Red October.
Shaw should've had Riker and Picard confined last week and only bring in Riker if needed aka Jellico. There's no way these guys who aren't part of the ship command chain should've been on the bridge really

I hope this is explained at some point. Because if the changeling had killed Jack then what would be the point of the trail for Vadik to find the ship and get Jack? This is the kind of (potentially) sloppy writing that takes me out of things.
That's not even getting into how, for all Vadic knew, the portal redirect of the Titan's weapons back on itself might've oiutright destroyed the Titan entirely, killing everyone on board, including the Changeling infiltrator. Keep in mind Captain Shaw himself was hurled across the bridge after a weaker attack than that.
I'll have to watch that scene again..it seemed like he was more explaining about the rogue Changeling element not the origins of the war itself. I could be remembering wrong though.
