Early Review of Picard Season 3

Yea it's always sucked. That's why they need to fire the lighting person.
According to RMB, Terry did fire the DISCOVERY cinematographers and brought in his guy from 12 MONKEYS.

If anything is looking too dark on your TV, you can adjust the settings. Look up your TV model on rtngs or the AVS Forum.

I doubt he fired them, it's more likely he just didn't hire them again for season 3.
IIRC cinematography is a contract job.

Also Discovery is filmed in Canada and Picard is filmed in LA, I doubt they shared cinematographers.

Ok, fair point on the difference between being fired and not asked back.

Going off IMDB, Crescenzo G.P. Notarile, Philip Lanyon, and Darran Tiernan all have overlapping DP credits on DISCOVERY and STP. Jimmy Lindsey and Jon Joffin only have credits on STP.

Notarile, who did five 2020 episodes of DISCOVERY, looks like he has a few STP season 3 credits. Maybe they were filmed during season 2? Either way, get your TV settings ready to brighten if you see his name in the credits ;)

Fair enough, with planes, trains and automobiles I guess DP's can overlap when the shows aren't filming simultaneously.

A big difference is Jason Zimmerman, the visual effects supervisor on SNW and DISCOVERY, not being credited on STP season 3. One of the greatest NuTrek flaws in lighting is in effects shots... murky ships etc.

He also wasn't on Season 2 I'm 99% sure that was Brian Tatosky

We might be both right. Jason Zimmerman is credited as a supervising producer of 20 STP episodes, and lead visual effects on 11. Season 2 was shot so out of order, that the 12 MONKEYS editor has a half credit on 201. Also looks like the costume designer was swapped out for season 3 as well. Hopefully the civilians will no longer have costumes straight from the outlet mall down the freeway.

The ships get proper exposure (get it? :D) in S3

I like this as in my mind its just one harried guy trying to light the whole show by himself. Just imagining Rich Evans-esk screaming and yelling as he desperately tries to light enormous sets with about four lights.

I mean... its space. Things are murky and dark in space.

and cold…it is very cold..in space

Quiet too.

So no more phaser sounds, or sounds generally.

Honestly, the only media I've ever seen to do space properly was Deadspace, and despite being in the vast vaccum its so claustrophobic because all sounds are just whatever rings through your suit.

Did they change the uniforms again? Honestly, with these shows, I have no idea what a Starfleet uniform even is anymore.

Dave Cullen has been leaked the final four episodes of the season. Major takeaways:
  • It sticks the landing
  • The season is another mystery box
  • He could easily see Ed Speelers leading a follow up show
  • Episode 7 is very exposition heavy and deals with Vadic's backstory
  • There is a second F-bomb
  • He implies NuTrek critics are stuck with the past 14 years (so maybe Abramsverse, DISCOVERY, or SNW directly impact the plot, or maybe it's just having to live with the first two STP seasons), but this season leaves Star Trek in a much more recognizable place for legacy fans
  • The season "celebrates" Star Trek
  • Episode 10 is like a "homecoming "
And now a major spoiler
The ending of season 1 is partially retconned. Yes Picard is in an android body, but his consciousness was transfered. He's not just a copy of the original Picard
I know for some this will be way too little, but for me it's something I can live with.

That's not a retcon, they call it a transfer in Season 1.
