What are your controversial Star Trek opinions?

Not necessarily controversial, but all the best discussions are going on in this thread...

HBO Family had a ST movie marathon New Year's Day and it was interesting watching them back to back. We started on SfS and went through Insurrection (I was too tired to try rewatching Nemesis, aka, "You will believe an android can fly.")

I don't think I ever noticed before that there was a throughline (3 through 6) with Klingon fear that peace with the Federation would lead to annihilation of their race. Does anyone know if that was planned or if writers just piggybacked off each other? I found it added a nice depth to the films as a group.

Then we got to Generations and... it wasn't bad. Compared to TUC and FC, it definitely wasn't as strong, but it passed the torch adequately and had some really good bits (including Worf's "initiation").

I love FC. Cromwell is a joy and Marina got some nice comedy to do. Yeah, the Queen probably wasn't a great choice, but Krieg's performance managed to be both creepy and sexy, which is a good trick.

Insurrection was... fine. Which is sad, because nothing with F. Murray Abraham should just be "fine." It was a 2 part TNG ep with money. Picard flirting was fun though.

I don't know, so this is speculation only, but: I think Harve Bennett probably thought about the Klingons' motivations in TSFS, when Leonard Nimoy wanted the Klingons as villains instead of the Romulans, wondered about what they feared the most, and went from there. Then he must have shared that with Nick Meyer, when they cowrote TVH. Then they brought the idea to its final conclusion in TUC.

And mambo-ing, too. Beyond that... yeah, I agree with your assessment. And it would have been fine, if I agreed with Picard's position.

My understanding is that Meyer had nothing to do with the 23rd century part of the movie.

No, no, no, I mean he probably mentioned it to Nick Meyer while they were talking about the movie in general. It probably came up while they were shooting the shit.

They probably also went through the entire script after they finished writing their parts, just to make sure the film had the same voice and was consistent with itself throughout. Stuff like that.

That sounds like a reasonable thing to have done, but I gather that it didn't. I'm certainly open to correction.

Oh, and there was certainly no "They" that involved Bennett on TUC.

Nimoy and Meyer are the "they" I was talking about. I also mentioned Nimoy in that post. So I was speaking in short-hand.

Even if they didn't, I'm sure Nick Meyer has seen the whole film. So he probably heard the "The annihilation of the Klingon people!" line from TVH one way or another. ;)

Though maybe it was Nimoy who put in the "the annihilation of our culture" line instead of Meyer when it came to TUC. Either way, I think those two were largely on the same page. That's my sense anyway.

I enjoyed Insurrection but felt it could have been better – the humor often seemed forced, the romance subplot went nowhere (they deleted the Picard /Anij kiss scene, for one thing) and the Ba’ku are bland and undeveloped. If they had been indigenous to the planet, rather than just 600 settlers / squatters, the moral implications of trying to relocate them would have been stronger. A lot of fun and memorable moments in the film, though.

Is liking Counterpoint a controversial opinion? Hell I'm not a Voyager or Janeway fan and I think its a thoroughly enjoyable episode. It's so satisfactory watching Janeway beat that space nazi.

No, it's not. I was giving @Richard S. Ta a suggestion when he said he wanted to watch some VOY.

Though if I want to suggest Controversial Episodes of VOY to him where Janeway does Controversial Things: I'll recommend "Equinox, Part II" where she's in full bad-ass no-nonsense mode (where even Garak would be afraid of her!), and "Tuvix".

"Living Witness" is good too, though Uncontroversial. Thanks to Evil Janeway, I get even more enjoyment out of it now because it's basically Kate Mulgrew playing her character from Orange Is the New Black 20 years early.

I figure someone here will know... is TMP on HBO Max or somewhere else? I have a free Saturday coming up and, since my hubby doesn't want to see it again, I'm thinking of setting aside the 3(?) hours. I haven't seen it in forever and am interested in checking out the restoration.

Google "Just watch". You can search to see where any movie or tv show is available to stream or rent.
