First 10 movies off P+ and onto HBO MAX

More likely there were pre-existing contracts. Movies disappear off of Disney+ all the time and I don't think anyone is worried about them.

What contract would be in place where you lose your movies? It just seems like greed to me because the growth has stalled.

I think I read a month ago that Paramount was looking to merge their streaming app with Showtime.
For sure, all these streaming apps for $8-$12 bucks a month is a broken model that no blender is going to fix.
They need to go back to basics and lean to create entertaining entertainment again. After a while the one hundredth re mash of trek isn't entertaining anymore and can't be expected to carry a monthly fee platform.

Define loaning. I doubt it's for free.

As for why they would do this, I would guess viewing algorithms revealing viewings of those films are slow.

Why leave them languishing at home when they can be generating more $$$ being licensed out.

Just to assure those of us in the UK, the first ten Trek movies are still on "our" Paramount+. This seems to be just a US thing.

I read a analysis of Trek on P+ (can't find it now or else I'd post a link). The upshot of the analysis was that Trek has not been nearly as successful on P+ as CBSMount would have liked, although admittedly much of the piece was educated guessing. The piece focused on the original streaming content, but I can see it being even more true of the older content. As someone mentioned above, physical media. I have TOS and the TOS films on DVD. The most likely reason I would stream them is to be background while I'm working on something.

The game is all about subscriptions. It has less to do with any one production and winning the subscription game is more about becoming all things to all people.

Streaming deals for catalog content are often made years in advance. It's entirely possible that as far back as 2019 or whatever, HBO secured a deal to license the original ten movies for streaming for a three- or six-month period in 2022 / 2023.

Not entirely. In Paramlunt +’s case, subscriptions aren’t doing enough. This deal looks more like Paramount making a quick buck by licensing out their movies out to other services. It’s more profitable for Paramount to license out their stuff than rely solely on subscriptions.

I do think the new Star Trek series should go over to Netflix once they wrap up to ramp up demand for Star Trek. P+ is not pulling in a lot of subscribers. And with Doctor Who going to D+, this would make sense even if it's only there for a short period of time.

So Paramount+ is "the home of Star Trek" but the first ten movies have vanished onto HBO MAX?

Surely this can't be a good sign for P+, if they're loaning out their content elsewhere?

I noticed back in September during the anniversary of Trek that Paramount+ had been promoting itself as the home of the Star Trek SHOWS, rather than the films. In fact, when you pay attention to all the promotional images, NONE of them include any of the 13 films. It's all just the TV catalog. This probably has to do with the fact that prior to the re-merger, Paramount already had pre-existing licensing deals with other streaming services. It's the same reason Trek films were made available on the AMC+ app for one month prior to returning to Paramount+.

This isn't exclusive to Trek. There's a lot more Paramount titles that shuffle around. I remember the first Transformers film was available on HBO Max whereas the sequels were all on Paramount+. So it all depends on the package deals that these films fall in.

A few years ago, I bought the first 10 movies on Blu-Ray.
20 years ago, I bought all the TOS Movies and FC on DVD.
30 years ago, my parents bought me all of the TOS Movies on VHS. Later on, I rented the first three TNG Movies, as they were released, and made copies of them by using two VCRs.

I've never not had the movies in some type of physical media. So Paramount+ dropping them? Non-issue for me.
