What are your controversial Star Trek opinions?

If I'm bored on a starship I probably am in the wrong profession. ;)

Did you forget that Yeoman in TOS who was just around to dispense coffee and "provide a welcome change of scenery" whenever the male crew got bored of looking at the stars? ;)
So it seems even Starfleet officers can get bored of seeing the same sea of stars in the darkness all day every day :-P

Perhaps for them.

If someone doesn't like stars through their windows in their quarters how about some holographic image instead, a beautiful summer day for example?

In Tos starship battles happen at distances of tens of thousands or hundreds of thousands of miles.

At those distances enemy ships would be invisible to the unaided eye though a window.

But at that point you might as well have a holographic window altogether.

You could say the same thing about a house, but a lot of people would still rather have a real window even if the fake was 100% convincing. And there's no reason why a Federation starship shouldn't be perfectly capable of having both at the same time so everybody's happy.

Not really, because in real life windows are sources of natural light and can be opened for fresh air.
On a spaceship they can't.

Yes, really. Natural light and fresh air are not the only reasons a lot of people would want the window to be real. Some people just don't like the idea of looking at a window that is only showing them what they want to see instead of what is actually there.

Thank you, @Grendelsbayne . Windows are not just for fresh air but also a sense of orientation to one's location. I prefer to know where I am at, not looking for fresh air. Again, airplane windows are not functional but even on a night flight I prefer the window and see the stars.

My controversial opinion? Star Trek is just following the same path of every other niche thing that becomes mainstream. At this point the original premise is dead and the franchise is a corporate skin walker whose only goal is to extract as much money from new-geeks that started liking geek stuff because it is now popular and mainstream, and Star Trek has social capital to extract because it existed before these things were cool so it has some reverence. They don't care about old fans because they are a small minority and they aren't the ones buying star trek funko pops. The target audience is now Twitter and they only watch it to be popular and inclusive.

Eh, Star Trek's original premise died right about TMP/TNG when Roddenberry decided humanity had to "evolve" to be in the future.

My controversial opinion: Star Trek needs no reverence. If companies decide they want to continue making money on the property they own then that's as much in line with Star Trek's original purpose as any story idea. That people keep buying it says more about fans than it does the owners of the IP.

There’s no accounting for taste. I guess standards are just low now.

Maybe. Or maybe people just want to have that as part of their lives. It's not good, not bad-it just is. Most Trek fans I talk with have had Star Trek as a part of their childhood, so the idea of not engaging with it might just be way too uncomfortable, if they are even conscious of it at all.

The biggest thing people can do if they are convinced that the current product is unsatisfactory is not purchase it and encourage others to do the same. If it is all about money then taking away money is the answer, I would think.

I’m 41 and have watched Star Trek all my life. It no longer holds a place of reverence in my heart because to me, it ended in 2005. I hate seeing Trekkies turned into Star Wars fans who like everything just because it says Star Wars.
We used to have better written shows for the most part. Now we have a series that mocks Star Trek and it’s fans. SNW is a close imitation but it’s pretty distilled and watered down.

I don’t think money matters companies anymore especially with Blackrock throwing money around. And where can a person encourage others to not watch a show without being banned? The franchise is just a Potemkin village at this point.
