Strange New Worlds Costuming

Ooh! I wanted to start this topic but thought it was too forward of someone so new to the forum. There's an interview with her in Forbes where she talks about the inspirations of modern couture designers (like Alexander McQueen) and artists. Also gives props to the person who does their digital designs (those silicon microsymbols on the sleeves). Not sure if I'm allowed to link it though.

Don't be afraid to contribute because you're new. We have a friendly community who love trek minutiae.

on last weeks Ready Room there was a clip from the prop designer.
There were three versions of the phaser prop:
The hero prop was machined aluminum with a controller inside to change the LED color when the actor presses the buttons or pulls the triggers. Cost, $8,000 each for 6.
Foam prop, for the actors to wear on their uniforms, and rubber props painted to match the aluminum for stunts and background shots.
The new communicators also cost about $8,000 a pop.

I used to do costume design and builds for theater so it's a topic I relish. I noticed the ring T'Pring wore in the first trailers and got very excited because it looked exactly the same as the one Arlene Martel wore. Very sixties mod.

The fuzzy feelings are strong with SNW. See the Vulcan scene in Amok Spock wherein effort is made on every level to invoke Amok Time.

I like how they’ve retained the TOS shirt skirts by use of long jackets and leggings.

Design-wise I can’t fault SNW at all.

This. I've been saying since Day 1 that the stripes need texturing (braiding?) and the skinny stripes need to be broken stripes like TOS. I LOVE the TOS rank stripes. The only thing missing is enlisted rank insignia, which Trek just never seems to get around to properly addressing.

The one thing I think I like better from the Kelvin-verse is their shipboard tunics. Those are just so evocative of TOS. The SNW uniforms are pretty darn good, though. The boots are pretty clunky in the toe, but you don't spend a lot of time down there by their feet, so no big deal.

I’ve read somewhere that GR didn’t want to hew too closely the Navy braid. Personally, I’m fine with the stripes (it’s closer to the pilots); I just wish the braid lined up with the rank stated on camera.

As I understand the manufacturing process, they can't just take rank off of the cuffs and sew new pieces on - it's silicone hd microprinted detail on the fabric. So at the very least they have to remove the cuffs and substitute new ones with the correct rank. And who knows if that's even quickly available during production.

Yes, they should sort this out. They do everything else much better than most of the Trek shows. They ought to be able to stick a detail like this that the others most often get right.
