Sorry, but this was not a coherent story and I'm surprised a lot of you somehow think it is. Please stop.

Please stop what? Having your own opinion? You act as if you think the writers of the show check the episode ratings here for direction on future projects, and that you take the way other people vote in an online poll as a personal affront.

Lighten up, Francis.

How this hidden majority is giving this episode a 9 rating is beyond me. You all are entitled to your opinions and reviews, obviously, but this week I believe the majority are wrong in thinking this was a good episode. I'm not sure why we keep encouraging this sort of standstill pacing and story that seems to go no where and is giving us NO HINT AT ALL about where we're going with the resolution. Sorry, but this was not a coherent story and I'm surprised a lot of you somehow think it is. Please stop.

I have been watching Merlin and the writing is amazing compared to this Picard show.

I will watch it. analyze it and give you a 42 bullet point synopsis.

How this hidden majority is giving this episode a 9 rating is beyond me.

I remember in times past when someone said the same thing about DISC getting 10's. Well 9's are down from 10.

This episode was chock full of strong emotional beats across the emotional spectrum. You may want to count yourself lucky for not understanding some of them.

Ugh, another 6 from me. I've so wanted to like this series as I do all ST series. After a promising start, it's really limping in the middle.

Starting with the positive, I LOVED seeing James Callis again! He did a great job.

The plot is basically an unfunny remake of Red Dwarf's Terrorform episode.

Somehow, it was revealed to Picard that his father wasn't as bad as he thought. Too easy of a flip using information that wouldn't have been available.

I think this episode is the primary point for having Talinn. I'm guessing her being related to Gary Seven was added late in the game to create an Easter Egg. As I've pointed out in previous reviews, she's not cut from the same cloth. Her real purpose was to bring Picard out of the coma and, I'm assuming, the device that changes the appearance will be used again.

So, Picard is on good terms with his dead Daddy. Hurray. Ready to come out of his coma. And well, basically wheel spinning all around.

I don't mean sound so negative, but this one just didn't work for me.

Based on some of the things we're seeing this season, has anyone else floated the idea that Q might somehow be Picard, and that every interaction between the two throughout the life of the series may be some weird form of predestination paradox?

It feels we're stuck and we have been for a long time.
That's ironic given the theme of the episode! I agree with you.
Season 4 of Discovery should have been told in 3 or 4 episodes and it seems season 2 of Picard is a three-parter at best as well...
Again I agree. The writers just aren't up to the task of sustaining a season long arc. They should stick with multiple 2-3 parters per season. That allows them to get some depth but not worry about sustaining something for a season.

They can of course have season long (and longer) character arcs that develop over time. But they shouldn't try forcing plot arcs that long. It's just not working.

Funny way to summon a Q. Usually you just shout for him.
That cracked me up. We had this war with the Q that we never mentioned before. We ended it by sealing the moment in a bottle. Which I just happen to have right here in this bar!

I suppose the point of the season was to show that there's something wrong with Q, or maybe the whole continuum, but the scene was just ridiculous.

Sigh. Another really mediocre episode.

This season began so freakin STRONG and the middle part is really dragging. It's almost like they didn't really know how to execute the story they had in mind. What a real shame.

I can only hope next season, with the TNG reunion, won't be as bad. I have a feeling it won't be bad at all actually. I have really high hopes for season 3.

I'm not even sure where to begin with this episode. I've complained enough in the past about the trope of going into someone's mind, so I won't rehash that.

What relevant insights did we gain into Picard that change how we see him or how he sees the world? We just got a ridiculous B-movie that reveals information no one asked for. Like Doctor Who's Timeless Child plot, they've confused unnecessary backstory for character development.

This show was okay but rather slow this week with Picard's mindmeld with Talinn and Rios and the doctor's story line with the doctor and her son being on the la Sirena I really liked alot and Agnes's story were the most interesting parts of the show this week. I give it a 6 this week,

Please stop.
Stop what? It's personal opinion time. IDIC, etc, etc.
This is a Trek episode that will actually appeal to a wider general audience unlike, say, Star Trek 2009 which was marketed as being for general audiences but wasn't really.
I have to beg to differ. I have many people in my life who wouldn't touch Star Trek, much less SF, with a ten foot pole but found Trek 09 fun and accessible.

I think I just figured out how this is all going to end (seriously)....

Picard really did go to a Starfleet psychiatrist after not being able to commit to Laris. He then agreed to be hypnotized to figure out what's holding him back and what his darkest fears are.

Each of the characters represents a fear....

Borg Queen - Locutus (Never being fully human)

Seven - Not being accepted for who he is and fear of commitment.

Raffi - The longing to commit

Elenor - Death without fullfillment

Rios - The guy who wants to commit, but hides under the veil of a footloose and fancy-free playboy.

Agnes - Fear of being alone

Renee - Depression and unable to move forward

Q - The fear of losing the only strengths he's clung to all this time.

Adam Soongh - Not being able to fully make an emotional attachment to others. Putting up an emotional wall to prevent being hurt. Being exposed for horrors in the past.

Someone mentioned about Jean Luc's mom holding a baby. Maybe she had postpartum depression and sadly they took the child away and Picard thinks he was somehow responsible for it. Or worse yet, the baby died as would be symbolized by Soongh's many genetically-engineered daughters who didn't make it from various defects.

....

Borg Queen / Voice of psychiatrist: "We want peace, but first we need power"...

In order to have inner peace, Picard needs to gain power over his fears.

"Look up, Picard" is the key phrase that brings him in or out of hypnosis.

And as we've been discussing, everyone has been doing things that are totally out of character, which is Picard trying to break through the barrier of fears.

Agnes - Singing
Rios - Falls in love + shows dr + son his ship
Seven - No longer hindered by Borg past.
Guinan - Shotgun totin' wild woman

I'm going to break with the developing consensus and say that was the best episode since the first two.
Still, at least this episode was trying to do something other than just keep a bunch of stale B plots moving until the end of the season.
That's an interesting take. It's the best of the season because it's trying something different than the rest of the season.

They did try something different but it basically re-established the status quo. Picard is back. Borg Queen is still stomping around. Rios is still pining for the lady Doctor. We learned a little bit about Picard's backstory, but not too much.

I wouldn't recommend it. Given the positive response to the Season 2 opener and now watching the weeping and wailing and gnashing of teeth* having high hopes does not seem in the best of interest.

However, I have no doubt the ride will be quite entertaining.

*hyperbole ;)

Guinan serves macguffins, too!

I really appreciated that this was a more introspective, episodic story within the overall arc. With just three episodes left I don’t think there will be much more time for introspection.

I’m a little surprised with some of the negativity. This was a pretty important episode that actually gave Picard the insight he needed to take a step back and consider Q’s motivation and the bigger picture.

I do get some of the frustration. There are a lot of characters this series and it’s not yet clear how it all fits together.

Like DSC season 4 this season will stand after it is all released.

Until then, cue the rending of garments.
